Description:  D/D South

Die Markers:  Obverse:  WDDO-002.  Reverse:  E/W die crack through RIBUS of PLURIBUS and then turning down and running along the eagle's left wing.

1940-D 25¢ WRPM-002          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  D/D/D Wide West & Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Short E/W die gouge on the right side of the bust west of the ribbon.  Lathe mark above the IBER of LIBERTY.  Lathe mark near the rim from 4:30 to 5:15.  Obverse Stage B:  Light die crack on the contour of the bust positioned above the date.  Stage A die gouge abraded away.  Reverse Stage A: Wavy die gouge SE from the lower right side of the vertical bar of the F in OF.  E/W die crack through RIBUS of PLURIBUS to the top of the wing.  E/W die crack behind the eagle's head.  Die gouges that appear to be from tooling mostly E/W through most of the letters in QUARTER DOLLAR.  Reverse Stage B: Stage A die markers still present.  The die crack through RIBUS extends inward of the contour of the left wing to the I of AMERICA.  Secondary mint mark to the west abraded away at the top.  Short die crack inside of the contour of the right wing.  Second die crack running inside the contour of the right wing positioned under the right of the N of UNITED and ITED.  Third die crack from the lower right side of the N in UNITED running along the contour of the right wing and curving inward before the wing tip area.  A fourth very light NW/SE die crack just above the right wing tip.

1940-S 25¢ WRPM-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  S/S/S North & Southeast

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Die scratches east from the L and I in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B: Die scratches abraded away.  Reverse:  Stage A: Die scratch SE from right center of the F in OF.  Reverse Stage B: Die scratches abraded away.  Die crack from the top of the US in PLURIBUS to the outside of the left wing along the first A in AMERICA.  Die crack from the first S in STATES to the right wing curving inward and running to the QU of QUARTER.  Die crack east from the back of the eagle’s head.  Die crack through the laurel branches extending to the lower inner and lower center leaves on the left and into the field on the right.

1940-S 25¢ WRPM-002

Description:  S/S West

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  The obverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940-S 25¢ WDDO-001.  Doubling shows as a light spread to the north on the OD of GOD, WE, and the ST of TRUST.  A spread towards the center shows on LIBERTY.  NW/SE die scratches at the E of WE.  Obverse Stage B:  Die scratches at the E of WE are weaker.  Obverse Stage C:  Die scratches at WE are abraded away.  Chipped die crack at the front of the bust running SW to the 1 in the date.  Reverse Stage A:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940-S 25¢ WDDR-001.  Doubling shows as a light spread on USA and EPU, showing best on the first A in AMERICA.  Doubling also shows on the branch ends.  Die crack along the outside contour of the right wing that intersects a second die crack running through the wing tip.  Lathe gouge near the rim on the left side showing best at the U in UNITED.  Reverse Stage B:  Die crack at the wing tip extends to the upper left side of the Q in QUARTER.  Die crack that begins from the rim just left of 12:00 and runs through the middle horizontal bar of E of STATES and through the IBUS of PLURIBUS to top of the eagle's left wing.  Reverse Stage C:  Die crack from the top of the eagle’s beak running north to the rim.  E/W die crack through the olive branch (strong on the left side).  Die crack at the E of STATES is chipped at the rim.
