1964-D 25¢ WDDO-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on IGWT while a CCW spread from a pivot at about 12:00 shows on the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs SW from the lower N of IN.  A die scratch runs NW/SE near the rim to the left of the first T in TRUST.  Reverse:  Two heavy die scratches run SW/NE between the D of UNITED and the first S in STATES.

1964-D 25¢ WDDO-002

Description:  A close CCW spread shows as strong notches on the upper and lower letters of LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs from the lower U to the upper S in TRUST.  A die crack runs across the base of the bust with die chips above the 4 and just to the left of the ribbon.  A die crack runs WSW/ENE through the upper forehead and into the hair.  A die crack runs E/W through the upper hair below the ER of LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs from the lower right of the D in UNITED to the upper left of the first S in STATES.  A die crack runs down the eagle’s lower right wing.  Two die chips can be found on the right wing below the T in UNITED.  A large die chip can be found on the eagle’s head.

1964-D 25¢ WDDO-003

Description:  A close CCW spread shows on the BERTY of LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short strong die scratch can be found on the lower left of the ribbon.  A die crack runs across the base of the bust extending into the field and curving NW to the left of the bust and also running into the lower queue.  A long die scratch runs NNW from the upper left of the second T in TRUST.  A die crack through the upper hair extends into the field below the IB of LIBERTY.  A horizontal die scratch can be found between the lower E and R of LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die crack runs from the lower I of UNITED onto the eagle’s right wing.

1964-D 25¢ WDDO-004

Description:  A very close CCW spread shows on LIBERTY as notches on the upper left and lower right corners of the letters.  Slight doubling also shows on the bottom of the ribbon.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs SW/NE below the I in LIBERTY.  A die crack runs across the base of the bust extending into the lower queue.  Several die scratches run NNE from the front of the nose.  Reverse:  Two parallel die scratches run ESE from the upper R in QUARTER.  A die scratch runs SSW/NNE between the second L and the A in DOLLAR.  A large die chip can be found on the lower back of the eagle’s head.

1964-D 25¢ WDDO-005

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on BERTY, the date, and the lower queue.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs north from the upper left of the W in WE.  A long die scratch runs SSW/NNE to the left of the nose ending below the L in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs SSW from the bottom of the bust between the 1 and the 9 in the date.  Obverse Stage B:  A die crack runs NE from the front of the eyebrow into the forehead.  A die crack runs E/W through the upper hair.  A die crack runs across the base of the bust into the lower queue and extending into the field to the left of the base of the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  A die crack runs from the lower second S in STATES to the upper I in PLURIBUS.  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing and another runs down the left wing.  Reverse Stage B:  A long die scratch runs north from the tips of the arrows to the underside of the wing.  A short strong die scratch runs WNW from the lower left of the C in AMERICA.  Two parallel die scratches can be found between the lower F in OF and the first A in AMERICA.  A die scratch runs WNW from the upper left of the D in DOLLAR.

Description:  An extremely close spread towards the center shows on LIBERTY, the date, and the lower queue.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs north from the upper right of the E in WE to the underside of the chin.  Die scratches run south from the lower R and U of TRUST.  Two small die gouges (dots) can be found above the upper left of the U in TRUST.  A die scratch runs SW from the lower left of the I in LIBERTY.  A light die crack runs across the base of the bust.  Reverse:  A die crack runs through the lower right wing to the upper left of the Q in QUARTER.  Two die scratches run SW/NE to the left of the eagle’s neck.

Description:  Notches show on the upper left E and Y in LIBERTY and the lower right I, R, T, and Y in LIBERTY.  Doubling also shows on the upper 6 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short strong vertical die gouge can be found between the centers of the 9 and 6 in the date.  A die scratch runs SW from the lower left of the L in LIBERTY.  A light die crack runs across the base of the bust extending into the lower queue.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found on the bottom right side of the ribbon.  Reverse:  A die crack runs through the lower right wing to the lower left of the Q in QUARTER.  A large die chip can be seen on the lower back of the eagle’s head.

Description:  A very close spread towards the center shows on IGWT, the date, the designer’s initials, and the lower queue.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  An extremely strong die gouge runs from the rim through the upper right of the Y in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs east from the rim at about 9:30 extending to the center of the nose.  A heavy die crack runs across the base of the bust with numerous small die chips on the die crack.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found on the bottom right side of the ribbon.  Reverse:  A short die gouge runs south from the upper horizontal bar of the F in OF.  Two die scratches run NE from the tip of the leave above the second L in DOLLAR.  A strong die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing extending to the upper Q in QUARTER.  Die chips can be found on the right wing below the T in UNITED.  A die crack runs across the eagle’s beak and lower head.  A die crack can be found on the eagle’s upper left wing with small die chips below the M in AMERICA.

Description:  Extra thickness shows on IGWT, the date, LIBERTY, and the lower queue.  Strong notches show on the lower letters of LIBERTY, the upper left letters of IGWT, and on the upper left and lower left of the one in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Die scratches run NNW/SSE to the right of the lower E in WE.  Obverse Stage B:  A die crack running across the base of the bust extends into the field on the left and into the lower queue on the right.  A die crack runs east to west through the upper hair.  Reverse Stage A:  A strong die gouge (dot) can be found below the second A in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage B:  A die crack runs down the eagle’s lower right wing extending to the upper Q in QUARTER.  A die crack can be found on the eagle’s upper left wing.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs WSW from the underside of the loop of the 9.  Two die scratches run SE from the lower right of the I in LIBERTY.  A short die scratch runs WSW from the upper left of the R in LIBERTY.  A light die crack runs across the base of the bust.  A die crack runs NE from the upper back of the forehead through the upper hair.  Reverse:  Short strong die gouges extend from the center left E and S in STATES, the lower left E, C, and second A in AMERICA, the lower left I of PLURIBUS, the upper left U and N of UNUM, and the upper left wing.  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing with a die chip below the U of UNITED.

Description:  A close CCW spread from a pivot at about 1:00 shows on IGWT, the date, the designer’s initials, and the lower queue.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs SW from the upper left of the L in LIBERTY.  A heavy die crack runs across the base of the bust curving south on the left to the top of the one and into the lower queue on the right.  A separate die crack runs SE from the lower queue to the rim at about 4:30.  Reverse:  A die gouge (dot) can be found just under the point of the eagle’s beak.  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing extending to the upper Q in QUARTER.  A die crack runs from the US in PLURIBUS down the left wing to the lower I in AMERICA.

Description:  A significant CCW spread shows on the upper 6 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short strong die gouge runs west from the upper L and the upper I in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found inside the lower C in AMERICA.  Die scratches run SW/NE below the back ends of the arrows.  A die gouge runs through the lower part of the leave to the right of the back of the arrows.
