1951 1¢ Pr WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong Class II spread towards the center shows on the letters of IGWT.  A slight spread shows on the date, the upper hair details, and Lincoln’s eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Two small die gouges can be found on the forehead just above the bridge of the nose.  A die gouge (dot) can be found between the lower I and B of LIBERTY.  Two small die gouges can be found near the rim east of the date.  Obverse Stage B:  The die gouges near the rim are weaker.  Obverse Stage C:  The die gouges near the rim are now gone.  Reverse Stage A:  A small die gouge can be found on the lower T of CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  A new reverse die has a doubled die listed as 1951 1¢ Pr WDDR-001.  Reverse Stage C:  The reverse die was changed back to the reverse die found on Stage A specimens.

Description:  Close counterclockwise spread shows on IGWT from a pivot at 5 o’clock.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None known.  Reverse:  Light die scratches run NNE from the inside of C in AMERICA.

1951 1¢ Pr WDDR-001         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Extra thickness and separation lines show on EPU, and the left wheat ear and stem.  Extra thickness also shows on the right wheat ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1951 1¢ Pr WDDO-001B.  Reverse:  Small die gouges can be found above and to the left of the 2nd dot.  A horizontal die gouge can be found to the right of the upper right wheat at about 2:30.  The bottom of the right wheat stem is very weak from die abrading.

1951 1¢ Pr WDDR-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong Class II spread towards the center shows on EPU, the dots, both wheat ears and stems, and the upper letters of ONE.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two short, vertical die gouges can be found to the right of the lower ear.  Reverse:  A horizontal die scratch can be found on the upper left N of CENT.  A short die scratch runs from NNW to SSE on the lower right N of CENT.  A short die gouge runs NW from the top of the 2nd T in STATES.
