1944-D 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Very strong Class VI extra thickness can be seen on the date, the letters of LIBERTY, and the letters of IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the eyebrow.  A die clash line runs from the underside of the chin to the bowtie.  Reverse:  None noted.

Description:  Moderate Class VI extra thickness can be seen on the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the Y in LIBERTY.  A die crack runs SW/NE from behind the ear running through the top of the ear and then intersecting with another die crack that runs WSW/ENE through the upper forehead.  Reverse:  VLDS.  A die crack runs down the right side of the T in CENT.

Description:  Strong Class VI extra thickness shows on the date, the letters of LIBERTY, and IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die crack runs ENE from the lower back of the head above the ear and into the forehead.  A die crack runs WNW through the forehead from the top of the bridge of the nose.  A die clash line runs from the underside of the chin to the bowtie.  Obverse Stage B:  The die crack through the hair is much heavier and curves to the NE in the forehead extending to the rim as it passes through the right side of the 1st T in TRUST.  Reverse Stage A: A die crack runs through the lower right wheat kernels.  Reverse Stage B:  A large die chip can be found on the bottom of the T in CENT.

Description:  An extremely close spread shows on E in WE and 44 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Stage A:  North to south die scratches show southwest of the mouth above the beard.  A small die crack shows in the hair above the ear.  A concentric die scratch shows at the rim under the bust.   Stage B:  A large die chip is present on the 1 in the date.  Die crack in the hair is much longer with a branch down across the back of the ear.  Worn north to south die scratches show southwest of the mouth above the beard.  Concentric die scratch at the rim under the bust no longer visible.  Die gouge above left side of B in LIBERTY.  A large die crack runs across the lapel and NW into the shoulder.  Reverse:  Stage A:  Die crack on lower T in CENT.  Die gouge SE of S in PLURIBUS.  Die gouge inside right side of N in CENT.  Stage B:  New reverse die.  Circular die scratches through ONE CENT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two short, diagonal die scratches can be found below the earlobe.  A strong die gouge can be found in the field to the left of the lower shoulder.  Reverse:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found inside the O of ONE.  A die crack runs down the lower right T in CENT.  A short die scratch runs NE from the lower right side of the T in CENT.  A die scratch runs ESE from the bottom of the E in CENT.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found just under the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse of this variety is also an RPM that is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1944-D 1¢ WRPM-004, a D/D Tilted (Rotated).  Series of wavy die gouges to the upper right of the Y of LIBERTY.  Two die gouges below the O of GOD.  Die scratch to the lower right of the E of WE.  Reverse:  Two light die scratches below the O of OF.

Description:  Two extra eyelids can be found just under the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse of this variety is also an RPM that is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1944-D 1¢ WRPM-003, a D/D North.  Nearly horizontal and parallel die scratches can be found on Lincoln’s cheek to the right of his lower ear.  Short die scratches can be found on the collar to the upper left of the bow tie.  Reverse:  A nearly vertical die scratch can be found to the left of the C in CENT.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found inside the upper D in UNITED.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The mint mark is set lower than that seen on WDDO-001.  A die crack runs NE from the hair above the ear through the upper left forehead and into the hair above the forehead.  Reverse:  A short die scratch runs SW from the upper left 1st T in STATES.  A short die scratch runs WSW from the upper left R in AMERICA.

Description:  Very strong Class VI spread shows toward the center on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Short die gouges show west from upper T and R in TRUST.  Short die gouge southeast from the rim between WE and TRUST.  Short die scratch southwest from lower right first 4 in the date.  Light horizontal die scratch above the 1 in the date.  Circular die scratch next to the rim all around the obverse.  Reverse:  Die chip (small lump) on lower T in CENT.

Comments:  This die is very similar to many others in this year.  No markers could be matched to other similar dies including WDDO-020 which matches the Stage C die for CONECA: 7-O-VI.  Incidentally, the die chip on the lower T in CENT seen on Stage A listing for 7-O-VI likely matches this die, though an in-hand examination of an earlier die stage would be required for definitive determination.  Also, of note for this year, some listings may end up being discovered as duplicates in the future as additional stages of this or others dies are discovered.

Description:  Doubling shows as an extra eyelid to the south, doubling inside the 9 to the south, and doubling under TY in LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches run NE/SW left of and through 19 in the date.  Light die scratches run mostly north to south through ERT in LIBERTY. Reverse:  Heavy die scratch/gouge running through lower S in PLURIBUS to the upper left side of the second dot.  Criss-crossing die scratches run through STATES.

Description:  An extra eyelid shows to the close south.  Additionally, very tight doubling can be seen counterclockwise on TRUST under very careful examination.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Crisp small die gouge (dot) on the vest below Lincoln’s tie.  Light NNE/SSW die scratches behind the back of Lincoln’s head under G in GOD.  Obverse Stage B:  Small die gouge (dot) on the vest below Lincoln’s tie still visible though weaker.  Die scratches behind Lincoln’s head only faintly visible.  Reverse Stage A:  Light die scratches run NNE/SSW throughout essentially all the reverse fields.  Die scratch runs directly south from the left side of O in OF to the rim.  Four die scratches run ESE from the lower right E in ONE.  Light die scratch running parallel to the rim above the right side of E in EPU.  Reverse Stage B:  Central portion of the northmost parallel die scratch right of E in ONE faintly visible.  Die scratch above E in EPU faintly visible.  All remaining Stage A markers are no longer visible.  Die scratches run ESE through NT in CENT and ICA in AMERICA.

Description:  A nice Class V CW spread from a pivot at about 3:00 shows on EPU, the dots, the lower left wheat stalk and stem, and the right wheat stem.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A short, nearly vertical die gouge can be found just to the right of the Y in LIBERTY.  A die crack runs from NW to SE across the arm just below the shoulder.  A die scratch runs from west to east through the upper hair below and to the right of WE.  Obverse Stage B:  Two parallel die cracks run from WSW to ENE through the lower back of the forehead and the hair NNE of the ear.  Reverse Stage A:  Two parallel die scratches run from west to east through the upper E in EPU.  A somewhat rectangular die dent can be found above the right side of the upper left wheat ear.  A die scratch runs ENE from the center horizontal bar of the E to the R in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage B:  LDS.  Most markers are difficult to see or missing.
