Description:  D/D West

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A long NW/SE die scratch is seen to the right of the upper hair curl.  Rotational die scratches on the neck, ear, and lower front of the head.  Reverse:  Die scratch running from the lower left wheat stalk NE to the O in OF.  A NW/SE die scratch between the right upper F in OF to the bottom left of the first A of AMERICA.

1945-D 1¢ WRPM-003          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  D/D North

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Light die crack starting at the back of Lincoln’s ear meandering east onto the ear then running north ending in the hair.  Reverse:  Parallel die scratches run NE from the O in ONE to the R of PLURIBUS.  N/S die scratch at the bottom right of the C of CENT.  Several die scratches run SE from the right side of the left wheat stalk through the U & N of UNITED.  NW/SE die scratches between the O in OF and the lower left wheat.

1945-D 1¢ WRPM-004           “Best Of” Variety

Description:  D/D North

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Light die scratch at the back of Lincoln’s head running south ending the right of the Y of LIBERTY.  A short and stronger die scratch at the bottom of Lincoln’s head running south.  Reverse:  Die scratch starting at the top right of the N of CENT running east and ending above the T of CENT.

Description:  D/D North

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Small die gouges to right of upper Y in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  Parallel die scratches run NW from the upper left N in ONE.  A twisting die scratch runs parallel to the rim to the right of the upper right wheat stalk.  A strong die scratch runs from the lower right wheat stalk to the rim.  A die scratch runs NW from the inside of the U in UNITED.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Parallel die scratches running SW from the bottom of the 1 and 9 in the date.   Die scratch to the right of the bowtie running NNE towards Lincoln’s beard.  Reverse:  Die crack on the right side trunk of the T of CENT.

Description:  D/D South

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  NW/SE die scratch on Lincoln’s nose.  Parallel die scratches run from WSW to ENE on the front of the neck.  Obverse Stage B:  Die crack running from the rim to the bottom of the bust to the left of VDB.  Reverse Stage A:  Die gouge above the M of UNUM and another in the field to the lower left of the U of UNUM.  Die scratch running north from the top of the T of CENT to the bottom of the E of ONE.  Vertical die scratch to the right of the top of the T in CENT.  Vertical die scratch to the left of the O in OF.  Reverse Stage B:  Same as Stage A but markers are weaker.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Clash mark remnant in the field to the right of Lincoln’s throat. Clash mark remnant in the field to the left of the back of the neck.  Both clash marks have not been abraded completely.  A die scratch runs from NNW to SSE to the right of the nose and lips.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE below the front of the chin.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE above the 9.  Reverse:  Large die gouge inside the upper C of CENT.  Die gouge north of the right side of the D in UNITED.  Die scratch ENE from the upper right N to the E in ONE.

1945-D 1¢ WRPM-013

Description:  D/D Southwest

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die crack runs NE from the hair behind Lincoln’s ear runs through the upper ear intersecting a die crack that runs from WSW to ENE through the hair and upper back of the forehead and then turns NE through the hair above the front of the forehead and extending to the 1st T of TRUST.  Reverse:  The reverse of this variety is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1945-D 1¢ WDDR-001.  A Class II spread towards the center shows on the lower right wheat ear and stem and slightly on the left wheat stem.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE to the left of the E in EPU.  A die scratch runs from the bottom of the U in UNITED SE to the upper left O in OF.  A short die scratch runs north from the top of the D in UNITED.  A short die scratch runs from SW to NE to the left of the lower 1st S in STATES.

Description: D/D South

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Light E/W die scratches at the front of the neck and collar.  Strong ENE/WSW die scratch at the front of the neck that runs into the collar.  Die scratches south from the lower hair near the collar.  Short, strong NNW/SSE die scratch on the back of the collar.  Obverse Stage B: Stage A markers are weaker.  Die crack west from the last fold running over the designer’s initial to the bust.  Reverse Stage A: Long die scratch from the upper left side of the O in OF, running through the U in UNITED and to the left wheat ear.  Reverse Stage B: Weaker die scratch from OF.

1945-D 1¢ WRPM-016

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: NW/SE die scratch centered on the collar.  Die gouge in the field near the lower lip and beard.  ESE/WNW die scratch centered inside the U of TRUST.  Obverse Stage B: Die scratch at TRUST abraded away.  All other stage A markers are still present.  Die crack beginning left of the V of the designer’s initials and running ENE through the center of the lapel.  Reverse Stage A: Die gouge centered between the bottom of the C and E of CENT.  NNE/SSW die scratch inside the upper area of the last S in STATES.  Very weak die clash from the upper right side of the N of CENT to the left lower side of the E of ONE.  Reverse Stage B: Scratch at the S of STATES abraded away.  Die clash is barely noticeable.  Die gouge is still present.  New die gouge above the right side of the N in UNITED.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Tooling gouges on the outside of the vest.  E/W tooling gouge where the frontal hair and forehead meet.  Die gouge SW from the back of the collar.  Light scratch SSW from the lower back of the head.  Obverse Stage B: All stage A die markers abraded away except for a weak remnant of the die gouge at the collar.  Reverse Stage A: Beginning about 1/4 down from the right inside of the N in UNITED a long die scratch runs NW.  Reverse Stage B:  A die scratch runs NNE from the top of the O in OF through the center of the N in UNITED (new reverse die?)
