1942 50¢ WDDO-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  Doubling shows below the chin, left of the neck, left of the lower face area, below the right breast, the extended arm and center parts of the gown.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Long die scratch from the sun and running concentrically east to the 1 of the date.  E/W die scratches through the lower date.  E/W die scratches through the upper 9 and 4 of the date.  Die scratches from the right side plain of the ground running NE to the shoe.  Series of die scratches west from the lower leg of the R in LIBERTY through the leaves.  Die scratch east from center of the lower opening of the E in LIBERTY to the hair.  Obverse Stage B: Scratches at the date abraded away except for a weak scratch inside the top of the 9.  One scratch remains in the leaves.  Weaker scratch from the E of LIBERTY.  Reverse Stage A: E/W die scratch below the eagle's right side leg plumage.  Reverse Stage B: Die scratch very weak.  Heavy metal pull though the elements of the branch and pine needles on the left.

1942 50¢ WDDO-002

Description:  Doubling shows below the right breast, middle sections of the gown, the branches, and leaves held in the left hand.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Long, light die crack SW from the nose to the extended hand.  Reverse:  Die crack NE from the upper right side of the R of DOLLAR into the tail feathers.  Very weak die crack NE from the eagle's right (viewer's left) talon into the rock.

1942 50¢ WDDO-003

Description:  A Class II spread towards the center shows on the date, skirt lines above the left side shoe, sole of the right side shoe, back of the skirt above the right side shoe, lower lines of the right side drapery, upper area of the right side drapery below the leaves, right center of the gown, light on the leaves below the R in LIBERTY, light on the RTY of LIBERTY, and IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Light, slightly curving die scratch south from the left leg of the R in TRUST.  Reverse:  Die chip centered on the I of AMERICA.  Sort N/S die gouge SE from the left leg of the N in UNITED.

1942 50¢ WDDO-004

Description:  A spread toward the center shows on the date, beginning of the hill at the right shoe, sun rays, left shoe, lower left drapery, back of the gown above the shoe, and IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Light E/W die scratch slightly above center between the 1 and 9 in the date.  Reverse:  N/S die scratches through the pine needles left of the second (from top) wing feather.

1942 50¢ WDDO-005

Description:  A moderate spread toward the center shows on the date, skirt lines above the right shoe, sole of the left shoe, back of the skirt above the left shoe, lower lines of the right side drapery, upper area of the right side drapery below the leaves, and the right center of the gown.  Moderate south doubling on all letters of IGWT with strong notching visible on TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse: light crack at 4:00 of the sun.  Reverse: Very light N-S die crack from U of UNUM on EPU to the most upper left olive branch.  Very light E-W die crack from the 2nd left (from top branch) to the rim at 9:00.  Short die scratch into eagle’s neck.  Light die scratch north of S of PLURIBUS.

1942 50¢ WDDR-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A strong Class I CCW spread shows on all the letters around the rim, EPU, the pine needles, the pine cones, the rock near the rim, the dots, designer's initials, right side tail feathers and the right side wing feathers.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Die gouge on the left lower area of the E of WE.  Obverse Stage B: Weaker stage A marker.  Reverse Stage A: Die gouge on the outer curve of the rock to the left of the designer's initials.  Die gouge below the left leg of the R in DOLLAR.  Die scratch NE from the left upper side of the U in UNITED.  Reverse Stage B: Stage A markers gone.  Doubling shows to a lesser extent due to abrasion.
