Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Two very minor die scratches SW from the lower left and above left center of the B in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  Stage A die scratches abraded away.  Die showing signs of deterioration.  Reverse Stage A:  No prominent die markers.  Reverse Stage B:  Die showing signs of deterioration.

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Weak die scratches SSE from the lower center of the N of IN and running through the upper left of the horizontal bar of the first T in TRUST to the vertical bar of the first T in TRUST.  Very minor N by W/S by E die scratch between the lower area of the E in WE and the neck.  Reverse:  No prominent die markers.

Description:  What appears to be an S/S North is actually a damaged mint mark punch that affected numerous S-Mint working dies, including proof dies, for all denominations of coins in 1971.

Description:  S/S Northwest

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches run from WNW to ESE through the lower L of LIBERTY.  Reverse:  None noted.

1971-S $1 WRPM-004          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  S/S North

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Master die marker (Die gouge) on left edge (centered) of the I of LIBERTY.  Very light die scratch above mint mark.  Two die gouges to the lower right of the last T of TRUST.  Strong circular die scratches on most of obverse.  Strong die scratch running NW from the top left of the O of GOD.  Die scratches connecting the G of GOD with the R of TRUST and the O of GOD with the U of TRUST and the D of GOD and the S of TRUST.  Short NE/SW die scratches on either side of I of IN.  Strong die scratch to the upper left of the 7 of date.  Obverse Stage B:  Multiple die scratches about the mint mark.  NW/SE die scratch in the field above the mint mark.  Die scratches connecting the G of GOD with the R of TRUST and the O of GOD with the U of TRUST and the D of GOD and the S of TRUST are weaker.  Die scratch running NW/SE to the right of the upper 7 of date is weaker.  Die scratch runs S/E under and to the right of the G of FG.  Short NE/SW die scratches on either side and below the I of IN.  Long die scratch starts left of I of IN runs SE through the bottom of the I of IN ending in the field left of the first T of TRUST.  Die scratch above the B of LIBERTY.  Die gouge in the field to the upper right of the B of LIBERTY.  N/S die scratch inside the B of LIBERTY located slightly above right center of the curve.  Arching die scratch under FG. Die scratches forms an X below and to the right of the G of FG.  Weaker secondary mint mark.  Obverse Stage C:  Die scratches connecting the G of GOD with the R of TRUST and the O of GOD with the U of TRUST and the D of GOD and the S of TRUST are polished away.  Die chip on the upper first 1 in date.  X die scratch under the G of FG.  Obverse Stage D:  A new second die scratch to the right of the stage B NW/SE die scratch above the mint mark.  Die gouge on lower right edge of the 9 of date.  Reverse Stage A:  Short N/S die scratch east of the right lower point of the star below OF.  Long arching die scratches running SE between the F in OF and the star below. Die scratch starting at the right star point running east intersecting with the arching die scratches creating an X die scratch marker in the field to the right of the eighth star.  Die scratches run south from the wing to the left of the 11th star.  Short die scratch runs south from the right edge of the eighth wing tip left of the 11th star.  Reverse Stage B:  Dot Sized die chip below the left upper point of star under OF.  One die gouge under the E of ONE.  Reverse Stage C:  Small die gouge on the right edge of the left leg of the N of UNITED.  Two die gouges under the E of ONE.  Reverse Stage D:  Short die scratch running south from the eighth wing tip abraded away.  Die gouge on top edge of R of AMERICA.

Description:  S/S South

Die Markers:  Obverse: WDDO-004.  A spread towards the center shows on the date and slightly on the lower serifs of IN GOD WE TRUST.  Die gouge right of the 2 in the date.  Small die gouge (dot) NW of the 7 in the date.  Reverse: WWHR-001.  Die gouge above the left end of the T in UNITED.
