Description:  A very close spread shows on the designer’s initials and the word TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches run N/S to the left of the lips and chin.  A die scratch runs SW from the bottom left of the R in LIBERTY.  Reverse: None noted.

1964-D 10¢ WDDO-002

Description:  A strong spread to the east shows on the lips and forehead.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs SE from the bottom of the B in LIBERTY.  SW/NE die scratches can be found on the nose.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the lower 1st T in STATES.  A die gouge can be found below the A in STATES.

1964-D 10¢ WDDR-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A very strong Class I CCW spread shows on USA, ONE DIME, the dots, EPU, the flames, both lower stems, and the outer leaves.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  None recorded.  Obverse Stage B: Heavy die scratches SW from the lips and chin.  Short die scratch south from the bust just left of the 1 in the date.  Reverse Stage A: Series of die scratches NE from the right side of the flame.  Small die gouge (dot) centered between the M of AMERICA and the right upper oak leaf.  Reverse Stage B: Die clash from the left lower olive leaf through the lower olive and through the L of PLURIBUS.  N/S die scratch between and extending below the IC of AMERICA.

1964-D 10¢ WDDR-002          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A very strong Class V CW spread shows on UNITED, the first S in STATES, ONE DIME, the dots, EPU, and the olive branch and leaves.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Several die scratches through the BER in LIBERTY.  A strong die scratch runs from the middle of the E to the bottom of the R in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B: Numerous die scratches can be found surrounding the head.  Reverse Stage A: A die scratch runs from the bottom of the first U in PLURIBUS to the N in ONE.  Several die scratches run through UNITED.  Reverse Stage B: A long die scratch runs from the middle of the NE in ONE to the D in DIME.  A long die scratch runs from the bottom of the 2nd S in STATES to the top of the oak branches.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on USA, ONE DIME. E PLU, and the NUM of UNUM.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Blunt tail 9.  A nearly horizontal die scratch can be found above IN.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse from heavy abrading of the die.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the T in UNITED.  A die gouge can be found inside the upper N in ONE.  A die scratch runs ENE through the upper NUM of UNUM.

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on USA, ONE DIME. E PLU, and the NUM of UNUM.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Blunt tail 9.  A short diagonal die gouge can be found above the U in TRUST.  A die scratch runs NNW from the nose to the bottom right of the R in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the lower first A in AMERICA.  A die gouge can be found below the M in AMERICA.  A die gouge can be found inside the D in DIME.

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on USA, ONE DIME, E PLU, the NUM of UNUM, the outer olive leaves, the outer oak leaves, and the flames at the top of the torch.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Blunt tail 9.  A small die gouge can be found to the left of the lower B in LIBERTY.  A die gouge can be found above the front curl of hair.  Obverse Stage B:  Same as Stage A.  Reverse Stage A:  None significant.  Reverse Stage B:  A die gouge can be found above the top olive.  A die scratch curves NW from the top left of the E in ONE.

Description:  A close spread towards the center shows on AMERICA and ONE DIME.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Blunt tail 9.  None significant.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the lower I in UNITED.  A die scratch extends NE from the upper I in DIME.

Comments:  Mechanical doubling shows on most of the reverse design elements of the specimen examined.  Care needs to be taken so that you don’t confuse the mechanical doubling with the doubled die doubling.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Blunt tail 9.  None significant.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs NNE from the top of the P in PLURIBUS.

1964-D 10¢ WDDR-010

Description:  A light spread toward the center shows on the letters around the rim.  The strongest doubling shows at ONE DIME.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: NE/SW die scratch between the T of LIBERTY and the rim.  SW die scratch from the left fork of the Y (center) to the T (below center) in LIBERTY.  NE/SW die scratches through the lower area of the 6 in the date.  Series of die scratches SSW from the eye.  Obverse Stage B: Stage A markers still present.  Reverse Stage A: Light die scratch south from the tip of the olive branch to the right inside center of the N of ONE.  Series of light die scratches north from the right upper oak leaf.  Reverse Stage B: Stage A markers still present.  Die crack from the right lower area of the torch base SE to the left center of the M in DIME.  Die crack from the rim at 5:00 running NW through the left inside of the M in DIME.

Description:  A CW spread from a pivot at 8:30 shows on OF AMERICA and the right dot.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratch NNE from the top center of the 6 in the date.  Die scratches NW from the profile to LIBERTY.  Die clash at the bridge of the nose.  Reverse:  Die scratch NNW from the left side of the first U in UNUM through the second dot at EPU, through the lower acorn and to the torch holder.  Series of die scratches NE from the right side of the top oak leaf to the E in AMERICA.

1964-D 10¢ WDDR-012

Description:  A very close CCW spread shows on ONE DIME from a pivot at 12:00.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Die chip (dot) above the eyelid.  Small die chip (dot) about left center inside the R of LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B: Die chip above the eyelid still present.  Die chip inside the R is gone.  Cluster of die gouges right of the right leg of the R in LIBERTY.  Reverse Stage A: Heavy die gouge hanging from the left underside of the first T in STATES.  Wavy die gouge west from the lower band of the torch holder and above the mint mark.  Die chip (dot) centered between the I and M of DIME.  Die gouge above the right side of the B in PLURIBUS.  Reverse Stage B: Weaker dot at the D in DIME.  Weaker gouge at the T in STATES.  All other Stage A markers abraded away.  Long die scratch south from the B in PLURIBUS through the mint mark.  Many N/S die scratches throughout the olive branch.  Die crack from the rim at 3:15 and running WNW through the C in AMERICA.

Description:  A very close spread towards the center shows on the letters around the rim but best on ONE DIME and AMERICA.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches south, hanging from both sides of the last T in TRUST.  Reverse:  Die chip (dot) on the left upper side of the torch base.

Description:  A spread to the east shows on the left side flame and the left upper torch holder.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die chip in the field right of the upper opening of the E in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  NNW/SSE die scratch right of the right dot when viewed from UNUM.  Light die scratch south from the right lower olive leaf and through the left side of the B in PLURIBUS.
