1922 $1 WDDO-001

Description:  A CW spread shows on the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die crack runs along the front of the base of the bust.  A die scratch runs SSW/NNE to the right of the second two in the date.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found to the left of the bottom of the second two in the date.  Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1922 $1 WDDR-003.  A strong spread to the east shows on the olive branch and leaves, the eagle’s talons, the back feathers on the lower legs, ONE, the DO in DOLLAR, the rays to the left of the legs, the rays running through ONE, and the rays running through the DO in DOLLAR.

Comments:  The specimen examined had mechanical doubling on the left side of the digits in the date.  Care needs to be taken to not confuse this mechanical doubling with the doubled die doubling which is best seen on the lower right of the digits in the date.








1922 $1 WDDO-002

Description:  Doubling shows on the date, the designer’s initials, and TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None significant.  Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1922 $1 WDDR-004.  Doubling shows on the olive branch and leaves, the eagle’s talons, the back feathers on the lower legs, the rays to the left of the legs, and the rays running through and above ONE.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found above and between the third and fourth rays from the right.

1922 $1 WDDO-003

Description:  Doubling shows on the date, the designer’s initials, the L in LIBERTY, and IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A nearly horizontal die scratch runs below the R in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1922 $1 WDDR-005.  Doubling shows on the olive branch and leaves, the ray running to the right of the eagle’s upper right wing, the eagle’s talons, the rays to the left of the legs, and the rays running through and above ONE.  The back feathers on the lower legs are tripled spreading to the left and to the right.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the upper part of the ray that passes between the O and first L in DOLLAR.

Description:  A strong Class V CCW spread from a pivot at about 12:00 shows on the upper olive branch and leaves, the eagle’s talons, the back feathers on the lower legs, and the underside of the right wing.

Description:  A strong spread to the east shows on the olive branch and leaves, the eagle’s talons, the back feathers on the lower legs, ONE, the DO in DOLLAR, the rays to the left of the legs, the rays running through ONE, and the rays running through the DO in DOLLAR.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1922 $1 WDDO-001.  A CW spread shows on the date.  A die crack runs along the front of the base of the bust.  Reverse:  None noted.
