Description:  S/S East

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  N/S scratches through the 1 and 9 of the date.  N/S die scratches above LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  Die crack runs E/W above the VDB.  Obverse Stage C:  Stage B die crack has now grown; die crack over VDB starts and ends at the rim at on both ends.  Die gouge above the G of GOD.  Reverse Stage A:  The reverse is a doubled die variety listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1948-S 1¢ WDDR-001.  An extremely close spread towards the center shows on the upper left wheat lines.  Small die chip centered on the outer left leg edge of the first U of UNUM.  Reverse Stage B:  Two short die scratches on the left side of the N of CENT.  Small die chip shows in the field above the E of UNITED.  Reverse Stage C:  Second reverse.  Die scratch runs north from the top of the Oof ONE ending in the field below the U of PLURIBUS.  Die scratch runs south from the bottom left leg of the N of CENT.  N/S  die scratches inside the upper E of CENT.

Description:  S/S/S West & Tilted

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  N/S die scratch on the bridge of the nose.  X-shaped die scratches show above the 1 in the date.  N by W/S by E die scratch between the upper area of the 1 and 9 in the date and the lower opening of the 9 in the date.  Long N/S die scratches in the field right of the nose and beard.  Short N/S die scratches on the nose and east of the eye.  Die scratches north from the right side of the Y in LIBERTY.  Die scratch north between the T and Y of LIBERTY.  Slightly curving E/W die scratch right of the designer’s initials.  Obverse Stage B:  Stage A markers present but weak.  Die clash at the throat.  Obverse Stage C:  Die clash is very weak.  Die scratch on the nose is abraded away.  Other stage A markers are present but weak.  Reverse Stage A:  N/S die scratch running through the right side of the E in ONE and the upper left of the T in CENT.  NNW/SSE die scratches through the ES of STATES.  NNW/SSE die scratch through the upper right side of the T in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  Stage A markers still present but weaker.  Die scratch through the E of ONE only.  Reverse Stage C: Weak stage A markers.  Scratch through the E on ONE reduced to a short scratch below the E.

Description:  S/S West

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  North and NNW die scratches above the R and T in LIBERTY.  D shaped die gouge on the jacket NE of the designer’s initials.  Obverse Stage B:  Obverse die scratches are weaker.  Die clash at the throat.  Gouge on the jacket still present.  Reverse Stage A:  N/S die scratches on the entire reverse.  N/S die crack between the rim and the right wheat grains at 4:00.  Reverse Stage B:  Second Reverse.  NE/SW die scratches at the E of EPU.  Heavy die scratch from the I of UNITED running south and curving slightly through the F in OF.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Die scratches in the field on the right edge of the profile, above the bow tie and along the right edge of the bust.  N/S die scratches about the date and on the bottom right bust.  Stronger die scratch seen running north from the 4 in date.  Stronger die scratch seen on the bottom right bust.  Die gouge under VDB and bust.  Die scratches show at the back of the head and neck.  N/S die scratches show at LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  Remnants of a die clash shows at the throat above the bow tie and on the edge of the upper bust left of the 1 in date.  Die scratch runs north from the left of the upper 8 in date. Large die chip shows in the field above the RT of LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage C:  Remnants of the die clash has been reduced to a rectangular mark due to die abrasion.  Reverse Stage A:  N/S die scratches on most of reverse.  N/S die scratches show inside the O of ONE.  N/S die scratches show inside between the arms of the E of ONE.  N/S die scratches show to the left edge of the T of CENT.  Die scratch runs north from the lower right edge of the left wheat stalk trough the U of UNITED ending in the field above.  N/S die scratches show at the UN of UNITED and OF.  Reverse Stage B:  Die clash remnant shows at the NE corner of the N of CENT runs to the bottom of the E of ONE.  Reverse Stage C:  Stage B clash remnant is very faint.  Stage A die scratches between the arms of the E of ONE are gone.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Die scratch runs south from the bottom of the 8 of date.  Die chip at base of foot of 4 of date.  Die scratch runs south from inside the lower E of WE ending in the field below.  Strong mostly N/S die scratches at the top curl in the hair.  E/W die gouge at the curl of the hair passing through the N/S die scratches in same location.  E/W snake like die scratch east of the ear.  Groups of E/W die scratches show under ear; the die scratches with the strongest one on jaw end at the neck below the jaw line.  Obverse Stage B:  Stage A die scratch under 8 is weak.  Most other die scratches about the 8 are gone.  Stage A die chip at the base of the 4 is also very weak.  Obverse Stage C:  Die dent shows in the field to the left of the tail of the 9 of date.  Only the strongest E/W die scratch shows under ear at jaw line.  Reverse Stage A:  Die scratches run north from the top of the T of CENT ending at the bottom of the E of ONE.  Die gouge runs south inside the lower N of UNITED.  Reverse Stage B:  Stage A running from the top of the T of CENT no longer touches the E of ONE.  The die gouge inside the lower N of UNITED is weaker.  Reverse Stage C:  Stage A die scratches on top of the T of CENT are now faint.  Die gouge inside the lower N of UNITED is no longer there with just a small chip sized mark visible.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratch at the upper E of WE.  N/S die scratch shows to the right of the nose.  Die scratch runs north from the top right of the T and Y of LIBERTY.  Die scratch shows north and west from the top left of the 1 in date runs north ending below the chin.  Reverse:  Die crack on the right side of the right wheat stalk.  Die scratches inside the C of CENT.  Die chip centered inside the C of CENT.  Die scratches to the left of the C of Cent ending above the N of UNITED.  Die scratch runs south from the upper loop of the first S of STATES ending inside the E of AMERICA.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Three short vertical die scratches in the hair below the D of GOD.  Die scratches seen running south from the bottoms of ERT of LIBERTY.  Die scratch runs north from the top of the T of LIBERTY.  Die chip shows north and west from the V of VDB on the back of the lower bust.  Die gouges next to the rim south and west of the V of VDB.  Die scratch in the field between the bottom of the bust and the rim southeast of the B of VDB.  Reverse:  Die chip inside the first U of UNUM.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Small die gouge above the N of IN.  Die scratch above the N of IN.  Die scratch in the field at the edge of the back of the head.  Die scratch runs from the upper lip south to the top of the chin.  Die chip inside the upper 9 in date.  Die scratch between the 1 and 9 of date.  Reverse:  Die crack on the right side wheat kernels of the right wheat stalk.  Short die scratches show inside the upper and lower C of CENT.  Die scratch runs south from inside the D of UNITED ending at the top of the M of AMERICA.  Die scratch runs south from the M of AMERICA.  Long die scratch runs south from the top left of the E of UNITED continuing south through the last A of AMERICA ending at the right wheat stalk stem.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Stage A:  A vertical die scratch can be found to the right of the chin.  Die scratches run north from the top of the 1 in the date.  A short die scratch runs SSW from the underside of the nose.  Stage B:  All Stage A markers are still visible, but weaker.  Reverse:  Stage A:  A die scratch runs SSE from the top right of the E in STATES.  Stage B:  All Stage A markers are still visible but weaker.  New die scratches run SSE from the first S in STATES.  A die crack runs along the left side of the left wheat ear which turns to the rim at 9:30.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die gouges run roughly NNW to SSE and N to S left of the date, along the lower beard and angle of the jaw, and on Lincoln’s shoulder/coat.  A short die scratch runs west through the lower left of the W in WE.  Reverse:  A nearly N to S die scratch runs from the left side of U in UNITED up to the level of the middle of O in ONE.  Several die scratches run roughly NNW from O in ONE.  A NNW to SSE die scratch runs from T in CENT to E in ONE.  Several roughly N to S die scratches run through M and C in AMERICA.
