1938 25¢ WDDO-001

Description:  A spread towards the east shows on the D in GOD, WE, and the ST in TRUST with the spread increasing from left to right.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch can be found just above the hair between the E and R in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die crack runs through the center of the RIBUS of PLURIBUS to the top of the eagle’s left wing.  A die crack can be found above the branch north of the T in QUARTER.

1938 25¢ WDDO-002

Description:  A spread to the north shows on GOD, WE, and the UST in TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short die scratch runs east from the upper right of the 8 in the date.  Die scratches run WSW/ENE through the lower B in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing into the field to the left of the Q in QUARTER.

1938 25¢ WDDO-003

Description:  A spread to the north shows on GOD, WE, and the UST in TRUST.  It is similar to, but not quite as strong as WDDO-002.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Numerous N/S die scratches run through IGWT.  A die scratch curves south from under the tip of the nose.  Two die scratches curve SW from the upper left of the I in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die files as 1938 25¢ WDDR-002.  A Class II spread towards the center shows on USA and QUARTER DOLLAR.  A strong die gouge protrudes from the right wing under the N in UNITED.  A die scratch runs through the center of the RIC in AMERICA.

1938 25¢ WDDR-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  Extremely strong extra thickness shows on USA, QUARTER DOLLAR, EPU, the leaves, the branch stems, and the lower wings.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  NNW/SSE die scratches can be found above the OD in GOD.  A die scratch runs SW from the tip of the nose.  Reverse:  A strong die gouge can be found to the left of the upper first T in STATES.  A strong die gouge runs SW/NE to the right of the lower F in OF.

1938 25¢ WDDR-002

Description:  A very close Class II spread towards the center shows on USA and QUARTER DOLLAR.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die files as 1938 25¢ WDDO-003.  A spread to the north shows on GOD, WE, and the UST in TRUST.  It is similar to, but not quite as strong as WDDO-002.  Numerous N/S die scratches run through IGWT.  A die scratch curves south from under the tip of the nose.  Two die scratches curve SW from the upper left of the I in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A strong die gouge protrudes from the right wing under the N in UNITED.  A die scratch runs through the center of the RIC in AMERICA.
