Description:  D/D Tilted

Die Markers: Obverse:  Stage A:  Small die dot on Lincoln’s neck.  Die scratch runs east to west just under mint mark and into Lincoln’s vest.  Die scratch runs northeast from center of 9 to upper right side of 8 in the date.  Small die gouge centered below W in WE.  Light die scratches runs northeast above R and T in LIBERTY.  Stage B:  Die dot on Lincoln’s neck still present but more prominent.  Die scratch between 9 and 8 faintly present.  All other Stage A die scratches worn away.  Die gouges in front of and below bowtie.  Die gouge on lower right L of LIBERTY.  Stage C:  Die dot on Lincoln’s neck still present.  Die gouge on L of LIBERTY still present.  Strong die scratches run NE to SW throughout the obverse, including prominently through the date, mouth, nose, RTY of LIBERTY, through O in GOD, and TRUST.  Stage D:  Die dot on Lincoln’s neck still present.  Die gouge on L of LIBERTY not visible.  Stage C die scratches very weak, with die scratch through O in GOD and S in TRUST only markers still faintly visible.  Stage E:  Die dot on Lincoln’s neck still present but markedly weak.  All other previously seen markers no longer visible  Die gouge left of T in TRUST.  Die gouges above I and B and well above L in LIBERTY.  Die gouge centered above 98 in the date.  Reverse:  Stage A: Die scratch under central bar of second S in STATES.  Die scratches running mostly NNE in and below bay 2 and 3.  Die scratches run mostly northeast through bay 7-10.  Nearly horizontal die scratch on right roof.  Die gouges below column 9.  Stage B: Stage A die scratches all present but weak.  Die gouges under first A in AMERICA and S in PLURIBUS.  Light die crack column 9 and 10.  Stage C:  New reverse die.  Strong die gouge left of C in CENT.  Die dot left of T and die scratch running ESE from N in CENT.  Light die scratches visible through RICA in AMERICA.  Die scratches run NW/SE inside memorial bays 3 and 4.  Stage D:  Strong die gouges left of C in CENT and left of T in CENT still visible.  Other Stage C markers no longer visible.  Stage E.  Die gouge left of C in CENT still visible though worn.  Die gouge inside lower R in AMERICA.

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Diagonal die scratch runs from the upper right edge of the I of IN ending between the legs of N of IN.  Die scratch runs NE from under the bowtie.  Reverse:  Die cracks show on columns 9, 10, 11, and 12.  Light die crack runs along the bottom of the Memorial base that extends SSE to the rim on the right side.

1980-D 1¢ WRPM-001 DELISTED

Description: Delisted as an RPM.  Purported D/D Northeast

Die Markers: Obverse: Stage A: Die crack south from jacket to rim.  Multiple die gouges throughout the obverse, including prominently around LIBERTY and one on Lincoln’s temple. Stage B: Same as Stage A. Reverse: Stage A: Die polishing lines in bay 2, 10, 11. Stage B: Die polishing lines very weak.  Die crack along right memorial base.  Die crack right cornice tip.  Die gouges under C and A in AMERICA.  Die gouge right of T in CENT.  Die gouge above bay 10.

Comments: This listing is left for informational purposes. This die was listed as RPM #2 in the 1983 book The RPM Book by John A. Wexler & Tom Miller, though CONECA does not list this as a variety.  Four different stages have now been examined, and all show various amounts of die gouges on the obverse and reverse (two reverses were used).  The initially described stages are left below, though two earlier stages have also been found with a different (LDS) reverse.

Die Markers: Obverse: Die gouges inside and to southwest of the date.  Die scratch south from the center of the W in WE to the head.  Die scratch NE from the upper left side of the Y in LIBERTY.  Light die scratch running north to south directly behind Lincoln’s head. Reverse: Die chips in the lower area of the first bay.
