1948-D 50¢ WWHO-001          Doubled Working Hub

Description:  A close spread SE shows on the date while a close spread towards the center shows on IGWT and LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The die markers will be different for each of the affected working dies.  Reverse:  The die markers will be different for each of the affected working dies.

Comments:  The same working hub doubling affected the obverse of the 1948 P-Mint half dollars.










1948-D 50¢ WDDO-001

Description:  A Class II spread toward the center shows on LIBERTY.  An extremely close spread toward the center shows on IGWT and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratch south from the tip of the nose.  Reverse: WRPM-001.  D/D Tilted (Rotated).  Series of NNE/SSW and NE/SW die scratches between the E of EPU and the right dot.  Two E/W die scratches under the D of UNITED which link together on the right.

1948-D 50¢ WDDO-002

Description:  A Class II spread toward the center increases in strength to the right, shows doubling on BER of LIBERTY and IGWT.  Tripling shows on the TY of LIBERTY and the top of the head.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Light NE/SW die scratch between the head and the E of LIBERTY.  Small die gouge in the field east and below center of the Y in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  WRPM-002.  D/D Tilted (Rotated).  Very short die gouge to the left and slightly below center of the bell hanger.  N/S die gouge in the field approximately centered between the H and A of HALF.

1948-D 50¢ WDDO-003

Description:  A spread toward the center shows light on the L of LIBERTY, GOD and the first T in TRUST.  Weaker doubling shows on some of the letters of GOD WE TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Light NE/SW die scratch between the head and the L of LIBERTY.  Reverse:  The reverse has the doubling from WWHR-001.  E/W die scratches between the rim and the ED of UNITED.  Short N/S die scratch at the inside left center of the D in UNITED.

1948-D 50¢ WWHR-001          Doubled Working Hub

Description:  A strong spread NW shows on IGWT, the dots, UNITED, HALF DOLLAR, and the right side of the bell clapper.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The die markers will be different for each of the affected working dies.  Reverse:  The die markers will be different for each of the affected working dies.

Comments:  CONECA has not listed this variety as a doubled working hub and has listed a number of the working dies as different varieties.  The same working hub doubling affected the reverse of the 1948 P-Mint half dollars.

Description:  A Class II spread toward the center shows on EPU and the dots.  Strongest doubling shows on UNUM.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None visible.  Reverse:  WRPM-003.  D/D Tilted (Rotated).  Small die gouge on the upper center of the right diagonal bar of the M in UNUM.
