1986-D 1¢ Damaged Mint Mark Punch #1

Description:  An apparent split lower serif is the result of a damaged mintmark punch. It is not a RPM.

A light, NE-SW oriented die scratch shows inside the ear.  A die scratch runs SE under Lincoln’s nose.  Die gouge left of first T in TRUST.  Reverse: Die gouges right of and under I in UNITED.  Small die gouge (dot) between NU in UNUM.  Die gouge right of right roof tip.

Die Markers: Obverse: A tiny die gouge shows in front of Lincoln’s upper forehead. Light die scratches show between the middle B and E in LIBERTY. Reverse: A light, NW-SE oriented die scratch connects the middle N and E in ONE.  A die gouge extends from under the right side of the first U in PLURIBUS. Die flow lines run from the left side of the Memorial building into the UN in UNITED.

Comments: This variety was originally listed by CONECA as RPM #6, but was delisted.  Additionally, the exact same coin was later re-listed by CONECA as RPM #13, where it remains as the current listing.  The original CONECA coin was submitted by Delma K Romines; see carbon spots left of lower mint mark and above mint mark.  Photos of the RPM #6 listing can be seen in The RPM Book Second Edition: Lincoln Cents by James Wiles, PhD and the RPM #13 listing at VarietyVista.com.  Overlay of the below coin to the RPM #6 listing shows the coins to be identical in position, though the RPM #13 listing remains at an angle and cannot be used for overlay.
