Die Markers: Obverse:
Stage A: Light,
mostly N-S oriented die scratches run through the 1 and 9 in the date. A strong
area of die damage, resembling a circulation hit shows to the SW of VDB (This
damaged area is present on all examples of this variety studied thus far). A
very light die crack runs above the VDB initials. Faded die scratches run SE
from the front of the neck. A die scratch runs SE from the T in LIBERTY into
the back of the bust. The previous die scratch is overlaid by SW-NE oriented
die scratches. A long die scratch runs north between the L and I in LIBERTY.
Stage B: All
Stage A die markers are at least weakly visible including the die damage SW of
the VDB initials. A strong E-W die crack intersected by a perpendicular die
crack which runs north onto the bust shows above the VDB initials. Die
scratches run SSE from the underside of the nose. Reverse:
Stage A: A
light, N-S oriented die scratch grazes the right edge of the O in ONE. Two die
scratches run north from the lower crossbar of the E in ONE. NW-SE oriented die
scratches show to the NW and inside the lower opening of the O in OF.
Stage B: A
multitude of die scratches run in numerous directions throughout the entire
reverse. Of note is a long die scratch that runs south from the underside of
the left horizontal crossbar of the T in UNITED into the left wheat stem. A “V”
shaped die scratch pattern shows above the E in ONE. A die scratch curves NE
from the last S in STATES.

Numerous, mostly SSW-NNE oriented die scratches run through the date and onto
the front of the date. A die scratch curves to the south right of the S in
TRUST. Light, SW-NE oriented die scratches show below WE in the motto. Stage B: The
die scratch curving south to the right of the S in TRUST is very weak, but all
other Stage A die markers are visible. A strong series of mostly SW-NE oriented
die scratches show above the date and in front of the chin. A strong, WSW-ENE
oriented die gouge runs though the upper O in GOD. A SW-NE oriented die scratch
shows below IN and the G in GOD. A die scratch runs SW from Lincoln’s lower
hair. Stage
C: Most previous die stage markers are visible, but notably weaker.
Stage D: Only a
few of the die scratches above the date and in front of the chin and the die
gouge above the O in GOD are weakly visible from previous die stages. A die
chip shows on the forehead NNW of the eye. Reverse: Stage A (First reverse): Markers were difficult to find due to the circulated
nature of the example coin. An E-W oriented die scratch shows inside the lower
opening of the M in UNUM. Light, SW-NE oriented die scratches run through and
above the left wheat tip.
Stage B: All
Stage A die markers are at least weakly visible. A distinctive, curving die
scratch connects the D in UNITED with the R in AMERICA. A light, N-S oriented
die crack runs along the right edge of the vertical crossbar of the T in CENT.
A down sloping die scratch runs through PLURIBUS.
Stage C: Most
previous die stage markers are at least weakly visible including the
distinctive die scratch from the D in UNITED to the R in AMERICA. Die chips
show on the right edge of the vertical and horizontal crossbars of the T in
CENT.
Stage D (Second reverse): A NW-SE oriented die scratch shows along the SW edge
of the C in CENT. A strong die gouge (dot) shows between the E and N in CENT. A
die scratch runs from the underside of the N in CENT SE to between the ST in
STATES. A NW-SE oriented die scratch connects the U in UNITED with the O in OF.
