1971-D $1 WDDO-001

Description:  A Class V CW spread shows on IGWT, the date, the LIB of LIBERTY, the neck, the chin, the nose, and the designer’s initials.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None noted.  Reverse:  None noted.

1971-D $1 WDDO-002

Description:  A Class II spread towards the center shows on IGWT, the date, and slightly on the letters of LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two die scratches run NE from above the E in WE.  A die scratch runs from NW to SE inside the D of GOD.  A die scratch runs from WNW to ESE above the mint mark.  Reverse:  The reverse of this variety is a specimen of the scarce "Four Island" variety.  A die scratch runs SSW from between the bottoms of the A and T in STATES.

1971-D $1 WDDR-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A Class I CW spread can be seen on USA, EPU, the dots, ONE DOLLAR, the stars, the craters, the earth, and the left end of the olive branch.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two nearly parallel die scratches run SW from the bottom of the B in LIBERTY.  Close tripling shows on IGWT from WWHO-005.  Reverse:  This doubled die is on the scarce "Four Island" variety.  A short die scratch runs east from the lower right side of the left vertical bar of the N in UNITED.  A light die scratch runs parallel to the rim above the NIT in UNITED.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE midway between star #13 and the eagle’s tail feathers.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE above the crater to the right of the designer’s initials.

1971-D $1 WDDR-002

Description:  A Class II spread towards the center shows on USA, the stars, and EPU.  The strongest spread can be found at the top of the reverse.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse of this variety is also a doubled die listed as 1971-S $1 WDDO-002.  Reverse:  This doubled die is on the scarce "Four Island" reverse variety.  A die scratch runs SSW from between the A and T of STATES.  A die scratch runs SSE from the bottom of the 1st U in PLURIBUS through the N in UNUM.  A die scratch runs NE from the top right of the M in UNUM through the 2nd U in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs NE from the top left leave at the left end of the olive branch.

1971-D $1 WDDR-003          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A close Class I CW spread shows on USA, the 13 stars, and ONE DOLLAR.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short, diagonal die gouge can be found between the tops of the U and S in TRUST.  A die scratch runs ESE from the top right of the 2nd one in the date.  Reverse:  This doubled die is on the scarce "Four Island" reverse variety.  A die gouge can be found at the rim above the right side of the E in AMERICA.
