Comments:  This variety appeared in our 1984 book The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die (pages 129 and 130) where it was listed as 1964 1¢ 1-R-V.  It has since been recognized as a Class I doubled die variety.  Early reports of the variety were made by John A. Wexler and Tom Miller.  Stage A specimens of this variety are scarce and should command a significantly higher premium than Stage B or Stage C specimens.

1964 1¢ Pr WDDR-002          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong CW spread from a pivot at 10:00 shows on AMERICA, the designer’s initials, the lower right Memorial building, and the letters of ONE CENT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found on the center of Lincoln’s right shoulder.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs SW from the upper right R to the lower left I in AMERICA.

Cross References:  CONECA: 2-R-V, Breen: #2242, Crawford: CDDR-006

Comments:  As a proof variety it is highly unlikely that more than 3,000 specimens of this variety exist, as that is the average die life for a Lincoln cent proof die.  Consequently, this variety should be considered to be extremely rare.

Comments:  In the printed version of The CONECA U.S. Doubled Die Master Listing that was published in 1994 this variety was listed as 58-R-III and noted to be a “Small Design / Large Design”.  In Volume 1 of the Fourth Edition of The Cherrypickers’ Guide to Rare Die Varieties which was published in 2000, the CONECA cross-reference was given as 58-R-II.  In CONECA’s revised listings as posted on the “Variety Vista” website they now have it listed as 20-R-II.  There no longer is a Die #58 listing in the CONECA Doubled Die Files.  Coins with any of those listing numbers should be examined very carefully to determine whether or not it is the variety that I list as WDDR-008.
