1943 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Extremely strong Class VI extra thickness shows on the date, LIBERTY, and the letters of IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Numerous curving die scratches run through the hair and ear.  A twisting die scratch runs mostly south to north through the neck.  A heavy die scratch runs from WSW to ENE on the upper shoulder.  A die scratch runs from SSW to NNE below the 4 in the date.  A die scratch runs NW from the upper left O of GOD to the rim.  Two nearly parallel die scratches can be found SE of the beard running from SSW and curving NE.  Obverse Stage B:  A die crack runs from the back of the ear WSW into the field behind the ear.  Reverse Stage A:  A very long die scratch runs SSW from the 2nd U in PLURIBUS through the N of ONE and then curves south between the E and N of CENT ending between the D of UNITED and the 1st S in STATES.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE through the lower part of the left wheat stem.  Reverse Stage B:  A die crack from the rim above the L of PLURIBUS extends SE through the O of ONE to the E of CENT.

Comments:  This variety appeared in our 1984 book The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die and has proven to be quite a popular variety with collectors.  It is one of the strongest Class VI doubled die varieties in the Lincoln cent series.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found above the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Strong die scratches can be found on the center of the collar just below the neck.  A die crack runs from WSW to ENE through the upper forehead.  A die crack runs across the base of the bust.  Reverse:  The reverse of this variety is a strong doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Fie Files as 1943 1¢ WDDR-004.  A die gouge can be found to the right of the P in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs ENE from the upper E of AMERICA to the lower A of STATES.  A short, nearly vertical die scratch can be found below the left side of the O in ONE.

Description:  A Class I CW spread shows on LIBERTY, the 943 in the date, and slightly on IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Several short die scratches run from NW to SE between the bowtie and the chin.  Reverse:  A strong die gouge can be found between the lower C and E in CENT.  Die chips can be found on the upper C in CENT.  Strong die gouges can be found between the lower U and N in UNITED.  Die gouges protrude from the upper left U and upper left N of UNITED.  Die gouges protrude from the upper left and lower left O in OF.  A die gouge protrudes from the top of the C in AMERICA.  A die scratch runs from north to south through the C in AMERICA.

Description:  Extra eyelids can be seen above and below the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die clash mark can be found just to the right of the throat.  Short, strong, parallel die scratches run SW to NE to the left of the back of the neck.  Rotational die scratches can be found throughout the bust and the field to the left and right of the bust.  A short die crack runs SW from the bottom left W of WE.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs from SW to NE inside the lower E of CENT.  Three parallel die scratches run from SW to NE through the A of STATES.

Description:  A Class V CW spread shows on LIBERTY, and IGWT from a pivot at about 4:00.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A small die gouge can be found just above the top of the head south of the left side of the E in WE.  A vertical die clash mark can be found at the front of the throat.  A short, nearly vertical die scratch can be found SE of the chin.  A die crack runs from NW to SE through the lower front of the bust.  A die crack runs NW from the eyebrow into the forehead.  Obverse Stage B:  Same as Stage A, but a later die state.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs SE from the bottom left of the N in UNUM.  A die clash mark can be found between the lower C and E of CENT running below the C.  A die crack runs SSE from the bottom right of the 2nd A in AMERICA through the top of the right wheat stem and out to the rim at about 5:00.  A die crack runs SE from the lower right wheat grains and out to the rim at about 4:00.  A die crack runs NE from the upper right wheat grains and out to the rim at about 3:00.  Reverse Stage B:  New reverse die.  A long die scratch runs from SW to NE below the E in EPU.  A long die scratch runs NNE from the bottom of the E in STATES just touching the top left of the 2nd S in STATES.  Die scratches intersect to form an “X” below and between the C and E in CENT.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

Description:  A close CW spread shows on the letters of LIBERTY.  Notches show on the bottom left letters of IN.  An extra eyelid can be found SE of the normal eyelid.  Possible doubling can also be seen on the 43 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two parallel die scratches run from NE to SW below the G in GOD.  Two nearly parallel die scratches run SE from the upper lip.  A short die scratch runs from SW to NE between the T and Y of LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs from NNW to SSE through the upper right T of LIBERTY.  A die crack runs from east to west across the base of the bust with a branch turning SSW running to the right of the B in V.D.B. and out to the rim.  Another branch turns north running up the shoulder.  Another branch runs SW through the bottom back point of the bust and out to the rim.  Reverse:  A short die gouge can be found north of the right side of the N in ONE.  A light die crack runs south from the L of PLURIBUS to the upper left O in ONE.  A die scratch runs from north to south to the left of the top of the right wheat ear.  Strong die clash marks can be found between the C and E of CENT and between the C of CENT and the NI of UNITED.  Strong die clash marks can be found between the E of ONE and the N of CENT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs from SSW to NNE to the right of the eye.  Circular die scratches can be found on the neck below the ear.  Reverse:  LDS.  A die crack runs from the rim through the bottom right of the L in PLURIBUS, through the left side of the O in ONE to the top right of the C in CENT.  Several die scratches run NNE from the UN of UNITED through the C in CENT.  Two parallel die scratches run SSW from the bottom right of the A in STATES through the C in AMERICA.  A die crack runs along the wheat grains on the lower right wheat stalk curving out to the right to the right of the 2nd S in STATES.  A die chip can be found on the die crack where it turns to the right.
