1943-S 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  This variety is at least a tripled die.  A strong Class V CCW spread from a pivot at approximately 9:00 shows on the date, Lincoln’s bowtie, his lips, his nose, his eye, and the upper front curl of hair.  Doubling also shows on IGWT while close tripling shows on the letters of LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Six long die scratches run south to north above the 94 in the date.  Two parallel die scratches run SSE from the bottom of the R in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  A die scratch runs from north to south to the right of the Y in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs north from the top of the 4 in the date.  Reverse Stage A:  None noted.  Reverse Stage B:  A die gouge (dot) can be found inside the D of UNITED.  Several die scratches run SSE from the bottom of the N in CENT through the ST of STATES and the ER of AMERICA.

Comments:  This variety appeared in our 1984 book The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die where it was listed as 1943-S 1¢ 1-O-III (pages 75 & 76).  It was originally reported by David Lindahl.

1943-S 1¢ WDDO-002

Description:  An extra eyelid shows above and below the normal eyelid.  The extra lower eyelid is worn away in later die stages.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Stage A:  Concentric die scratches above IN GOD WE.  Die scratches run northwest in between the forehead and TRUST.  Light die scratches run north to south through LIBERTY.  No die crack is present above V.D.B.  Stage B:  Concentric die scratches above IN GOD WE are still present.  A die crack runs from the rim at 6:00 through the base of the bust and back to the rim at 7:00 above V.D.B.  Two parallel die scratches run north from the T of LIBERTY.  Stage C:  Concentric die scratches above IN GOD WE still visible but weaker.  The die crack running from the rim at 6:00 through the base of the bust and back to the rim at 7:00 above V.D.B appears unchanged.  Die scratches run north from the T of LIBERTY still visible.  Multidirectional die scratches are present under the chin.  Concentric scratches and large gouges, around and to the east of the ear.  Reverse:  The reverse of this variety is also a strong doubled die that is listed in the Wexler Files as 1943-S 1¢ WDDR-005.  Stage A:  Multiple die scratches run through AMERICA.  No die crack is present on the T in CENT.  Stage B:  A die scratch runs from SSW to NNE below the P in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs NNW from the upper right N in CENT.  A die scratch runs north through the R in AMERICA, between the S and T of STATES, ending below the N in CENT.  A die scratch runs from NW to SE through the lower C in AMERICA.  Die clash marks run from the E of ONE to the N in CENT, and between the lower C and E of CENT.  Stage C:  Die crack and chips on the base of the T in CENT.  Die clash marks essentially polished away.

1943-S 1¢ WDDO-003

Description: Doubling shows as medium thickness on the date and LIBERTY and light thickness on IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die dots are present east of the R and north of the U in TRUST.  A die gouge is present right of top of the nose.  A linear die gouge is present in front of the throat, just above the tie.  Reverse:  A die dot can be found centrally located north of the N and U of UNUM.  A die dot can be seen outside of the northeast corner of the N of CENT.

1943-S 1¢ WDDO-004

Description: Extra eyelids can be seen both above and below the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A centrally located die gouge is present between the S and T in TRUST.  Die scratches run north to south beneath the chin and down to the tie and vest.  Heavy crisscrossing vertical die scratches are present behind the head.  Concentric die scratches run in and around the ear.  Reverse:  A die crack runs southeast from the rim through the left wheat.  Die chips are present in the juncture of the left wheat stalk, where the ear and stem meet.  Heavy die scratches run SSW/NNE in and around CE in CENT.

Description:  A doubled eyelid is present below the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die chip is present in the upper outer part of the crosslet of the 4.  A die gouge is present under the bust, next to the rim.  Die scratches run NNE over the TY of LIBERTY.  Reverse:  Die damage to the west and south of the O in ONE.  Two die cracks run southeast from the rim to the upper part of the left wheat.  A die crack runs NNE from the rim to the lower left wheat. A die crack runs NNW from the rim to the lower part of the right wheat.

Description:  A close Class II spread towards the center shows on the 43 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found between the centers of the 9 and 4 in the date.  A die scratch extends north from the top of the R in LIBERTY.  A die scratch extends north from the top of the beard.  Reverse:  A die gouge extends NE from the center right side of the I of AMERICA through the upper C.  A short die scratch extends SW from the lower left E of EPU.  Numerous die scratches run north to south throughout the reverse.

Description:  A Class V CW from a pivot at 3:00 shows on the letters of LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two die scratches run SSE from between the bottoms of the E and R in LIBERTY.  Three vertical die scratches can be found to the left of the back of the neck.  A short die scratch runs SW from the bottom of the G in GOD.  Two long and nearly parallel die scratches run NNW from the 94 in the date.  Reverse:  A vertical die scratch can be found between the C and E in CENT.  A vertical die scratch can be found to the left of the top of the C in CENT.  A nearly vertical die scratch can be found to the right of the lower E in ONE.

Description:  Three extra eyelids can be found below the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short, strong die scratch runs WSW from the back of the neck.  A die gouge (dot) can be found well north of the 9.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE below the 43 in the date.  Reverse:  A short die scratch runs east from the bottom of the E in EPU.  A die scratch runs ENE from the bottom of the S in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs from NW to SE through the 2nd dot.  A die scratch runs from WNW to ESE above the letters in OF.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE between the C and A in AMERICA.

1943-S 1¢ WDDO-009

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found under the front of the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also an RPM that is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1943-S 1¢ WRPM-004.  It is an S/S West.  A long die scratch runs SE from the bottom left of the R in LIBERTY.  A long die scratch runs SSE from the bottom of the T in LIBERTY.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs NE from the center crossbar of the E in ONE through the top of the E.  Other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

Description:  Doubling shows to the north on the 19 of the date, front of the tie, lower lip, eyelid, and inner ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also an RPM that is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1943-S 1¢ WRPM-011.  Die scratches to the west of the W in WE run WNW.  Heavy concentric die scratches are present by the rim to the southeast of the second T in TRUST.  A vertical die clash is present in front of the throat.  Reverse:  Multiple die chips are present below the UR in PLURIBUS.  A die chip is present at the east side of the E of ONE, at the center horizontal bar.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found below the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die cracks are present running through the southwest corner of the bust, running SSW one ending at the rim.  A die crack runs southeast through the lower part of the jacket, then separates into two cracks, one continuing to the southeast, the other running southwest.  A die crack runs ENE from the center of the head towards the forehead and hair juncture.  Reverse:  A die crack runs WNW from the O in ONE, through the left wheat leaf, to the rim. A die crack runs southeast from the A in STATES, through the second A in AMERICA, continuing through the right wheat and terminating at the rim. Die damage below CE in CENT and continuing through NIT in UNITED, above the first T of STATES, and to the west of the first A in AMERICA. A die gouge runs southeast through RI in AMERICA.

Description:  Doubling is present inside the loop of the 9 and as several extra eyelids below the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Several die dots are present to the east of the D in GOD.  Two horizontal die gouges are present just north of the 3.  Arching die crack with a die chip present at the base of the bust, running east to west.  Reverse:  Die crack running SSW from the O of ONE to the E of CENT.  Die scratch running southwest from the T in CENT.  Die scratch running southwest through the second T and A in STATES.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None noted.  Reverse:  Two parallel die scratches run from WSW to ENE through the PLU of PLURIBUS.  X-shaped die scratches run through the I of PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs NE from the second dot through the upper left first U of UNUM.  A die scratch runs SSW from the center of the underside of the diagonal bar of the N in ONE.  A short die gouge runs north from the top left of the lower horizontal bar of the E in CENT.
