Description:  A spread towards the center shows on the date, the bottom of the front of the bust, the hair details at the top of the head, and slightly on IGWT.

1989 1¢ WDDO-001

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on the upper eight in the date and slightly on the eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Short die cracks extend from the bottom of the eight.  A strong die gouge (dot) can be found in the field well north of the R in LIBERTY and west of the upper ear.  Reverse:  Die clash remnants can be seen in the lower fourth Memorial bay.  Numerous die scratches run mostly E/W above the upper right Memorial.

Comments:  This variety was originally listed as WDDO-012 but was reassigned to fill the gaping holes that were created in the listings for this date when two doubled working hubs were recognized for the obverse of the 1989 Lincoln cents.










1989 1¢ WDDO-002

Description:  A spread towards the rim shows on the date and the letters of TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found NW of the one in the date.  Die scratches run south from the S in TRUST.  Remnants of a die clash can be found to the left of the back of the neck.  Reverse:  Die clash remnants can be seen in the upper seventh Memorial bay.  Numerous die scratches run mostly E/W throughout the reverse.

1989 1¢ WDDO-003          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  Strong extra thickness spread towards the center shows on the date.  Lesser extra thickness shows on LIBERTY and IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A small die gouge can be found inside the upper second nine in the date.  Obverse Stage B:  The obverse has been abraded with numerous die scratches running mostly WNW/ESE to the left and right of the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  Parallel die scratches curve NE from the top of the O in ONE.  Parallel die scratches run NW from the top of the T in CENT.  Numerous die scratches run mostly NW/SE below the Memorial.  Reverse Stage B:  The reverse has been heavily abraded with numerous die scratches now running mostly WNW/ESE throughout the reverse.

Description:  Strong extra thickness with some separation is spread towards the center on the date.  Lesser extra thickness shows on LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A very strong die gouge extends ENE from the rim to the right of the designer’s initials.  A die scratch runs SW/NE below the D in GOD.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs E/W through the upper letters of UNUM.

Description:  A close spread towards the rim shows on the designer’s initials, the lower second A in AMERICA, and the upper N in CENT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs south from the underside of the front of the chin.  Numerous die scratches run WNW/ESE to the left of the bust and to the right of the bust.  Numerous die scratches run SW/NE above the date.  Reverse:  A heavy die gouge runs NE from the upper right of the O in ONE to the top of the N.  Numerous die scratches run mostly NNW/SSE throughout the heavily abraded reverse.

Description:  A spread towards the rim shows very well on EPU and the dots, the lower letters of USA, the upper letters of ONE CENT especially the NT of CENT, the designer’s initials, and slightly on the shrubbery on both sides of the steps.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Light die scratches run NNE from the upper LIB of LIBERTY.  A light die scratch runs NW/SE through the upper loop of the second nine in the date.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found above the tip of the right cornice.  Die cracks run down the first two Memorial columns.

Description:  A close spread towards the rim shows on STATES OF AMERICA, especially as notches on the lower A’s.  Doubling also shows on some of the lower letters in EPU and the designer’s initials.  Notches show on the upper letters of ONE CENT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs through the TRU in TRUST.  Reverse:  Two strong die scratches run NE from the lower right of the E in ONE.  A die scratch runs east from the lower right of the S in PLURIBUS.  Two die scratches run through the upper ATE in STATES.  A die clash runs SSE from the bottom of the Memorial under the left pillar.

Description:  Extra Memorial columns can be found in the 8th, 9th, and 10th Memorial bays.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short die scratch extends from the upper left O of GOD to the rim.  Reverse:  A die cracks runs from the bottom left tip of the left Memorial base to the rim.  A short die gouge protrudes from the top right E of ONE.  Numerous east to west die scratches run through the N of CENT.

1989 1¢ WDDR-015        "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Extra Memorial columns can be found in the 8th, 9th, and 10th Memorial bays.  Partial extra floor details can be found in the 1st and 2nd Memorial bays.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Numerous die scratches run NE from the tops of the T and Y in LIBERTY.  Several parallel die scratches run SW from the bottom left of the O in GOD.  Die scratches run from SW to NE in the field to the right of the lips.  Die scratches run from SW to NE through the 19 in the date.  Reverse:  Parallel die scratches run from NW to SE from the bottom of the last Memorial column to the F in FG.  A die crack runs SE from the bottom tip of the right Memorial base to the rim.  A small die chip can be found on the edge of the right Memorial base to the left of the lower F in FG.  Two parallel die scratches run from SSW to NNE to the right of the T in CENT.  A die crack runs down the edge of the left Memorial base and then WSW to the rim.  Die clash remnants can be found at the bottom of the 3rd Memorial bay and the tops of the 7th and 8th Memorial bays.
