1934 1¢ WDDO-001

Description:  A very close Class II spread towards the center shows on the letters of IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die crack runs east from the lower back of the bust over the V.D.B. ending near the fold of the jacket.  Reverse:  The reverse is also a doubled die variety listed as 1934 1¢ WDDR-002.  A die scratch runs north to south just to the left of the vertical bar of the T in CENT.  A die scratch extends SSW from the lower inside of the M in AMERICA.

1934 1¢ WDDO-002

Description:  A very close spread to the west shows on Lincoln’s eye and eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two die scratches extend ESE from the top right and bottom right O of GOD.  A die scratch runs NE from the upper right side of the 3 in the date.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE between the 9 and 3 of the date.  Concentric die scratches run around the rim.  Letter length die scratches can be found at most of the letters in LIBERTY.  A die scratch extends NNE from the top of the L in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die crack runs SW into the field from the upper left O in ONE.  A die crack runs south through the lower left wheat ear extending to the rim at 7:30.  A die crack runs south through the lower right wheat ear extending to the rim at 4:30.

1934 1¢ WDDO-003

Description:  A very close spread to the east shows on the right side of the lower inner ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Several die scratches run west to east below the O and D of GOD and then curve NE to the right of the D.  Several die scratches run WNW to ESE between the E of WE and the first T of TRUST.  Reverse:  A short die scratch extends SSW from the upper right inside of the O of ONE.  Numerous short die scratches extend NNE from the upper right O of ONE.

1934 1¢ WDDO-004          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Very strong Class VI extra thickness shows on the date, LIBERTY, and the letters of IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found on Lincoln’s vest south of the 1 in the date.  Reverse:  A small die gouge (dot) shows between the upper N and I of UNITED.

This small die gouge on the vest is an obverse die marker for this variety.



This die gouge (dot) was the only die marker found on the reverse of this variety.  Earlier die states may have additional die markers.


1934 1¢ WDDO-005

Description:  An extra eyelid shows SE of the main eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found in the field SE of Lincoln’s bowtie.  Two die scratches running NW to SE show in the field to the right and above Lincoln’s eye.  Two die scratches that run NNW to SSE show in the field to the right of Lincoln’s nose.    Reverse:  A die gouge (dot) shows in the field south of the O in ONE.  Another die gouge (dot) shows in the field near the left wheat stem.

1934 1¢ WDDO-006         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  An extremely wide spread on approximately the centers of the 9 and 3 is probably the result of an offset and strongly tilted hub or die.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Several west to east die scratches run through the letters of WE.  A die scratch runs from the upper right R of TRUST ENE to the top of the U in TRUST.  A small die gouge is centered between the tops of the U and S of TRUST.  Reverse:  Several die scratches run from WNW to ESE through the URI of PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs from the lower right second U of PLURIBUS to the bottom of the S in PLURIBUS.  Several die scratches run NW to SE through the U and M of UNUM and also in the field between the M of UNUM and the top of the right wheat ear.  A long die scratch runs north to south to the left of the vertical bar of the T in CENT.

1934 1¢ WDDR-001

Description:  Extra thickness shows on both wheat ears and stems and slightly on the letters of EPU and the dots.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A long curling die scratch runs SW from the lower left side of the D in GOD.  Two die scratches run SSE at the back of Lincoln’s nose.  A few small die gouges show on the bottom of the nose.  There is a light die crack across the base of the bust just above the designer’s initials.  A series of SW to NE die scratches run throughout the hair at the back of the head.  Reverse:  Very short die scratches run north to south at the upper and lower area of the C in CENT.  A die gouge (dot) can be found in the field south of the I in AMERICA.  Two short die scratches extend SW from the left side of the first U in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs east from the center of the C in AMERICA to the second A.

Description:  Extra thickness shows on both wheat ears where it is stronger on the rights side of the reverse.  It also shows on the letters of EPU and the dots.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse of this variety is a doubled die listed as 1934 1¢ WDDO-001.  See that listing for more details on the obverse.  Reverse:  A short north to south die scratch can be found just to the left of the vertical bar of the T in CENT.  A light die scratch extends SSW from the lower inside of the M in AMERICA.

1934 1¢ WDDR-003         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Very strong Class VI extra thickness shows on both wheat ears and the wheat stems.  It also shows on the letters of EPU and the dots.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Three strong NW to SE die scratches show in front of the eyelid.  A series of west to east die scratches can be found through most of the letters of IGWT with the strongest being through the letters of WE.  Reverse:  A short die scratch extends SE from the lower right side of the E in ONE.  A light die scratch extends from the center of the first U in PLURIBUS east to the R of PLURIBUS.

Description:  Extra thickness shows on the E PLU of EPU, the left dot, and the top of the left wheat ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Five X-shaped die scratches, two to the east of the eye, one below the nose, and two below the beard can be found on the obverse.  A long die scratch extends north from the 9 in the date.  A short die scratch runs east from the bridge of the nose.  Reverse:  A long die scratch runs east from the right center of the C in AMERICA through the second A.  Two die scratches extend from the upper left side of the U in UNITED NW to the left wheat ear.

Description:  Extra thickness shows on the E PLU of EPU, the left dot, while Class II separation lines show at the top of the left wheat ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die crack runs along the base of the bust through the V of V.D.B. and then over the D and B.  A small die gouge (dot) appears in the field east of the bowtie.  A heavy die crack runs NNW to SSE in the upper fold of the vest.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs NE from the tip of the left wheat ear through the E of EPU.  A die scratch runs SSW to NNE in the upper left inside of the C in CENT.  A small die gouge shows on the underside of the C of CENT.  A die scratch runs from the upper right N of UNITED NNE to the C of CENT.

1934 1¢ WDDR-006         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A Class IV spread to the NW shows on the lower ON of ONE, CE of CENT, and also on the lower ED of UNITED.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs north from the lower L of LIBERTY.  Several west to east die scratches can be found between the upper T and R of TRUST.  Reverse:  A die scratch extends NE from the lower right second T of STATES.  A die scratch runs NE from the lower E of STATES while still another die scratch runs NE from the upper right U of UNITED.  A nearly vertical die scratch can be found to the right of the lower T in CENT.  A die scratch extends from the center of the N to the upper left M of UNUM.
