1940-S 1¢ WDDO-001

Description:  A close spread towards the center shows on the 40 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches run N/S through the zero in the date.  Reverse:  A short N/S die scratch can be found to the right of the top of the U in UNITED.

1940-S 1¢ WDDO-002          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Class VI extra thickness shows on the date, LIBERTY, and IGWT with the strongest spread on the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die crack runs from SSW to NNE through the left side of the E in LIBERTY.  A die gouge can be found in the field to the left of the head well left of the center of the ear.  A light die crack runs from WSW to ENE through the hair above the ear.  Obverse Stage B:  The die crack through the E in LIBERTY now extends all the way to the rim at about 8:00.  The die crack through the hair now extends to the back of the head and all the way to the U in TRUST.  A very light die crack runs SW from the 9 through the base of the bust and out to the rim at about 6:00.  Obverse Stage C:  The die crack from the 9 is much heavier.  Reverse Stage A:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940-S 1¢ WDDR-002.  Light extra thickness shows on EPU, the dots, and both wheat ears and stems.  The strongest spread is on the upper right wheat ear.  A feeder finger gouge runs north from the top of the T in CENT through the lower E in ONE.  Reverse Stage B:  A light die crack runs from the tip of the left wheat ear through the E in EPU and out to the rim.  Reverse Stage C:  The die crack from the tip of the left wheat ear is much heavier.  A new feeder finger gouge runs north from the top left of the E in CENT to the lower right O in ONE.

Comments:  Mechanical doubling is seen on the date, the mint mark, LIBERTY, and parts of the profile.  This should not be confused with the Class VI doubled die doubling.  By itself 1940-S 1¢ WDDO-002 would be on the borderline for Best Of status, but the addition of a minor doubled die reverse gives it a bump upward.

1940-S 1¢ WDDO-003

Description:  Extra thickness can be seen on LIBERTY and IGWT.  Separation lines from a spread towards the center can be seen on IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also an RPM variety that is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1940-S 1¢ WRPM-001 which is an S/S Northeast.  A die gouge can be found to the right of the bowtie.  Reverse:  A die crack runs through the lower right wheat grains in the right wheat stalk.

1940-S 1¢ WDDO-004

Description:  Light extra thickness shows on the date and LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs north from the top right of the Y in LIBERTY.  Die scratches run NNW/SSE in the field to the right of the nose and lips.  Reverse:  Die scratches run SE from the N in UNUM past the T in CENT.  A die scratch runs SSE from the lower left of the O in OF.

1940-S 1¢ WDDO-005

Description:  A close spread towards the center shows on the 40 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs N/S below the four in the date.  A die scratch runs NW from the left side of the four in the date.  A die scratch runs NNE from the top of the one in the date.  A die scratch runs N/S in the field to the right of the profile.  Reverse:  None noted.

1940-S 1¢ WDDR-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong Class II spread towards the center shows on the letters of EPU, both of the dots, both of the upper wheat ears, ONE, and the T of CENT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die crack runs ENE through upper hair from back of head to top of head ending between WE and TRUST.  Reverse:  A strong vertical die scratch can be found inside the C of CENT.  Three vertical die scratches can be found above the N of UNITED.

1940-S 1¢ WDDR-002

Description:  Light extra thickness shows on EPU, the dots, and both wheat ears and stems.  The strongest spread is on the upper right wheat ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  The obverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940-S 1¢ WDDO-002.  Extra thickness shows on the date, LIBERTY, and IGWT with the strongest spread on the date.  Extra thickness shows on the date, LIBERTY, and IGWT with the strongest spread on the date.  A die crack runs from SSW to NNE through the left side of the E in LIBERTY.  A die gouge can be found in the field to the left of the head well left of the center of the ear.  A light die crack runs from WSW to ENE through the hair above the ear.  Obverse Stage B:  The die crack through the E in LIBERTY now extends all the way to the rim at about 8:00.  The die crack through the hair now extends to the back of the head and all the way to the U in TRUST.  A very light die crack runs SW from the 9 through the base of the bust and out to the rim at about 6:00.  Obverse Stage C:  The die crack from the 9 is much heavier.  Reverse Stage A:  A feeder finger gouge runs north from the top of the T in CENT through the lower E in ONE.  Reverse Stage B:  A light die crack runs from the tip of the left wheat ear through the E in EPU and out to the rim.  Reverse Stage C:  The die crack from the tip of the left wheat ear is much heavier.  A new feeder finger gouge runs north from the top left of the E in CENT to the lower right O in ONE.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches can be found below the 9, to the left of the 1, to the right of the eyebrow, and below the L of LIBERTY.  A die crack runs from the head through the R of TRUST.  Reverse:  Die scratches can be found at the O of ONE, the CE of CENT, the T of CENT, and the NI of UNITED.

1940-S 1¢ WDDR-004

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on the wheat kernels in the lower right wheat stalk.  Extra thickness shows on the upper right wheat ear, the right wheat stem, the second A in AMERICA, and the ES in STATES.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None noted.  Reverse:  A die gouge line runs through the upper right wheat kernels in the right wheat stalk.  Two short die gouges extend from the rim at about 3:00.  A die gouge runs NW from the 3rd left kernel from the top of the left wheat ear.  Short die gouges run east from the upper left of the first U in PLURIBUS.

Description:  Extra thickness shows on the date and LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Die scratches run SSE below the 94 in the date running through the mint mark.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches are now extremely weak.  Reverse Stage A:  Two short parallel die gouges run E/W below the left dot.  Reverse Stage B:  A die crack runs NW from the upper left O of ONE extending to the rim after passing between the L and U in PLURIBUS.

Description:  A close spread towards the center shows on both wheat ears, EPU, and the dots.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die crack runs south from the E in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs south from the lower right of the D in GOD.  Reverse:  A die gouge runs through the lines of the upper left wheat stalk.  A short die gouge touches the top left of the N in UNUM.  A die gouge can be found in the lower left wheat stalk.  A die scratch can be found to the right of the E in ONE.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two small die gouges (dots) can be found below the E in LIBERTY.  A N/S die scratch can be found between the I and the B in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die gouge runs through the top of the right wheat lines.
