2009-P 25¢ DC WDDO-001

Description:  A partial extra earlobe can be found just below the bottom of the ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die pitting can be found to the left of the 1st T in TRUST and also near the queue above the AR in DOLLAR.  A short, vertical die gouge can be found just above the right side of the F in OF.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found in the field to the left of the right arm.

2009-P 25¢ DC WDDO-002

Description:  A partial extra earlobe can be found just below the bottom of the ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge touches the top of the D in GOD.  A long die scratch runs NNE from the top right of the U in QUARTER.  A light die crack runs across the base of the bust and through the upper designer’s initials.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found on the left lapel to the right of the 3rd button from the top.  A die crack runs down the upper part of the right shoulder.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found above the I in ELLINGTON.

2009-P 25¢ DC WDDR-001

Description:  A partial image of the right front of the sleeve can be seen going through the first black piano key on the left.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge touches the left side of the right vertical bar of the M in AMERICA.  A die gouge protrudes from the top of the C in AMERICA while another die gouge can be found just below the left side of the C.  Heavy die gouging can be found in the hair just above the ear and on the cheek to the left of the bottom of the hair.  Three strong die gouges can be found on Washington’s neck.  Reverse:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the J in JUSTICE.

Description:  A partial image of the sleeve can be seen to the left of the first black piano key on the left.

Description:  An extra black piano key can be found to the left of the 2nd black piano key from the left.

Description:  Doubling shows on the lower left side of the E in ELLINGTON.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches run through the lower LLAR of DOLLAR.  A die crack runs through the upper designer’s initials.  A small die gouge can be found just below the tip of Washington’s nose.  Reverse:  A pre-die chip depression can be found at the top of the piano below the LU of COLUMBIA.  A small die gouge can be found below the keys at the right end of the keyboard.

Description:  Doubling shows on the edge of the left sleeve to the left of the E in ELLINGTON.

Description:  Doubling shows on the edge of the left sleeve to the left of the E in ELLINGTON.  The doubling is similar to that seen on WDDR-005, but set lower.

2009-D 25¢ DC WDDO-001

Description:  Either a partial extra earlobe or possibly doubling to the curl of hair just to the left of the bottom of the ear can be seen between the bottom of the ear and that curl of hair.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found just below the bottom right U of TRUST.  Small die gouges can be found just above the ribbon in the queue.  Reverse:  Two small die gouges can be found to the left of the bottom of the 1st U in PLURIBUS.  A die gouge can be found between the B and U of PLURIBUS.  A small die gouge can be found inside the lower R of FOR.

2009-D 25¢ DC WDDR-001

Description:  A very strong Class I CCW spread from a rotation of about 14 degrees shows on the ELL of ELLINGTON, the first two black keys on the left, the left from edges of the keyboard, Ellington’s left thumb, between the normal fingers, and the right side of the left arm.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found inside the lower N of UNITED.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found just under the O of GOD.  A light die scratch curves NNW from the top of the I in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found below and between the T and R of DISTRICT.  A small die gouge can be found just above the head.  Some die pitting can be found to the right of the right end of the keyboard.

The Mint has acknowledged that this doubled die was produced by a rotational misalignment of images after the hubbing press was stopped before the hubbing was completed to reset the hub and die.  As such, it is a Class I doubled die as opposed to Class VIII.  The Mint was able to reproduce this error during tests to see what caused it.
