1942-D 1¢ WDDO-002 "Best Of" Variety Description: A Class V CW spread from a pivot at about 1:00 shows on LIBERTY with the date spread slightly towards the center. Die Markers: Obverse: Two parallel die scratches run from north to south to the right of the bowtie. A die clash can be found to the right of the front of the throat and another to the left of the back of the neck. A die gouge can be found at the rim above the O in GOD. Reverse: A small die gouge (dot) can be found inside the upper C in CENT. A short die gouge extends NNE from the upper right 2nd A in AMERICA. Submitted By: James C. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: The obverse is an RPM listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1942-D 1¢ WRPM-011 (D/D South). A die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the O in GOD. A die scratch runs parallel to the rim between the S and T in TRUST. A die scratch runs from SW to NE to the right of the throat. Obverse Stage B: The Stage A markers are much weaker and the RPM is barely visible. Reverse Stage A: A die scratch runs from SW to NE through the bottom of the P to the top of the L in PLURIBUS. A die scratch runs WSW from the top of the 2nd A in AMERICA. Reverse Stage B: A new reverse die was paired with the obverse. It is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1942-D 1¢ WDDR-006. Class VI extra thickness shows on the letters of EPU and the dots. A Class II spread towards the center shows on the left wheat ear and stem. A die gouge runs from SSW to NNE between the upper D in UNITED and the 1st S in STATES. Parallel die scratches curve from NNW to SSE through the U in UNITED and the O in OF.
