1970 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong Class I CW spread shows on IGWT, LIBERTY, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Die scratches run from NNW to SSE to the right of the forehead, nose, and lips.  Obverse Stage B:  VLDS.  The Stage A die scratches have been abraded and/or worn away.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs from north to south inside the U of UNITED.  Numerous die scratches run from SW to NE through the letters of ONE.  Numerous die scratches run from west to east between CENT and the bottom of the Memorial.  Reverse Stage B:  VLDS.  The Stage A die scratches have been abraded and/or worn away.

Description:  Doubling shows below the horizontal bar of the L in LIBERTY and above the horizontal bar of the 7 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Parallel die scratches run SE from the lower 1 in the date.  Die scratches run from north to south below the 0 in the date and below the T in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A short die gouge can be found above the A in STATES.  A small die gouge can be found below the 2nd S in STATES.  Numerous die scratches cana be found throughout the reverse.

Description:  A Class I CCW spread shows on IGWT, LIBERTY, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge (dot) can be found south of the left side of the E in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A light, horizontal die scratch can be found just above the right end of the Memorial roof.

Description:  Doubling shows below the top of the 0 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short, nearly vertical die gouge can be found to the left of the top of the I of IN.  Two parallel die scratches run from SW to NE to the right of the bottom of the I of IN.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs NNE from the lower right of the A to the top of the 2nd T in STATES.  A nearly vertical die scratch runs through the left end of the Memorial steps.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Short, strong die gouges protrude from the front of the lower vest south of the 1 in the date.  A short, nearly horizontal die scratch connects the lower L and I in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs from NNW to SSE through the lower part of the left Memorial base.  Two parallel die scratches run from the upper left O in ONE to the bottom of the Memorial.

Description:  The U, R, and B of PLURIBUS are spread towards the center.  The R, I, and second A in AMERICA are spread CCW.  The upper left E in STATES appears to have some doubling.  The S in PLURIBUS may also be doubled.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None noted.  Reverse:  A strong die gouge can be found at the rim above the E in STATES.  A raised line on the die appears as an incuse line between the lower E and R in AMERICA.
