Description:  A partial horizontal bar of the L in LIBERTY can be found south of the normal L.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the bottom of the I of IN.  Reverse:  EDS.  None significant.

1970-D 1¢ WDDO-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A nice Class I CCW spread shows on the letters of LIBERTY, IGWT, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs SW from the lower left R in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs ESE from the lower right G of GOD.  A die scratch runs SSW from the upper right 1st T in TRUST.  Die clash marks can be found above the RTY of LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  The die clash marks are gone.  The noted die scratches are weak.  Reverse Stage A:  Die scratches run from SW to NE through the ED of UNITED.    Reverse Stage B:  The noted die scratches are very weak.

1970-D 1¢ WDDO-003

Description:  Doubling shows above the 7 and 0.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch or die crack runs from the top of the head through the bottom right side of the E in WE and out to the rim.  The mint mark is set low between the 9 and 7 and it is slightly tilted.  Reverse:  Two, short parallel die scratches can be found to the left of the upper I in AMERICA.

Comments:  The coin examined was a lower grade coin.  A higher grade coin may display additional die markers.










1970-D 1¢ WDDO-004

Description:  A partial horizontal bar of the 7 can be found above the 7.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A short, vertical die gouge can be found between the lower S and T in TRUST.  Numerous die scratches run from SW to NE through the date and mint mark.  Obverse Stage B:  Die clash marks of the Memorial bays can be seen to the left of the neck.  Remnants of a clash mark from the roof run from the 1 in the date to the bust.  Numerous abrasion die scratches run throughout the obverse.  Reverse Stage A:  A short die scratch connects the bottom of the 1st T and the A in STATES.  A small die gouge touches the bottom right of the N in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  Numerous abrasion die scratches run throughout the reverse.

1970-D 1¢ WDDO-005

Description:  Doubling shows under the horizontal bar of the 7 and below the 0.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Strong clash marks from the Memorial bays run through the RTY in LIBERTY and below the chin.  Parallel die scratches run NE from the nose.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE through the 9 and 7.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A markers are weaker.  A die gouge can be found below and between the T and R in TRUST.  Obverse Stage C:  The die clash marks through the RTY are gone but those below the chin are still visible.  Reverse Stage A:  Numerous die scratches run from NW to SE throughout the reverse.  A die crack runs down the 1st Memorial column.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches are much weaker.  A die crack runs down the last Memorial column.  A strong die gouge, probably a feeder finger scrape, runs NW from the top of the left base of the Memorial.  Reverse Stage C:  Numerous die scratches run frorm SW to NE on the upper left part of the reverse.

1970-D 1¢ WDDO-007        "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A Class I CW spread shows on the letters of LIBERTY, IGWT, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Two die gouges extend from the rim above and just right of the 2nd T in TRUST.  Die pitting can be found below the lower left 0 in date.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A die markers are very weak.  Obverse Stage C:  Die clash marks can be found in the field behind the neck.  X-shaped die scratches extend from the top of the nose.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Reverse Stage A:  A die gouge can be found between the lower N and T of CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die marker is very weak.  A short, horizontal die gouge can be found in the lower 2nd bay.  Reverse Stage C:  Tripled die clash marks can be found below the left side of the Memorial.  An inverted Y from a die clash can be found in the upper 2nd bay.  Abrading has caused the Memorial roof to appear detached.

1970-D 1¢ WDDO-008

Description:  An extra horizontal bar of the 7 shows above the normal 7 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found above the right side of the Y in LIBERTY.  A small die gouge can be found between the centers of the T and Y of LIBERTY.  Two short, strong die gouges can be found north of the E in LIBERTY.  A short, horizontal die gouge can be found above the L of LIBERTY.  A die crack runs from SSW to NNE through the hair above the ear ending at the top of the head below the W of WE.  Obverse Stage B:  Obverse is heavily abraded.  The die gouges around LIBERTY are weaker, but still visible except for the die gouge above the right side of the Y.  A die scratch runs north from the top of the head to the rim to the right of the E in WE.  Parallel die scratches run NNE from the vest to the left of the date.  Parallel die scratches run NNW from the top left E and top left R of LIBERTY.  Reverse Stage A:  A die gouge touches the top right 1st S of STATES.  A short, horizontal die gouge can be found NE of the designer’s initials.  Die pitting can be found to the right of the T in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  A short but strong die scratch runs from SSW to NNE to the right of the top of the T in CENT.  Die clash remnants run NW from the top of the left cornice, NE from the top of the Memorial below the US in PLURIBUS, and south from the bottom of the Memorial below the left post.

Description:  Doubling shows above the horizontal bar of the 7, slightly above the top of the 0 in the date, and slightly below the L in LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die gouge (dot) can be found below the D mint mark.  A small die gouge (dot) touches the bottom right of the N of IN.  A die scratch runs from SSW to NNE to the right of the chin.  A die scratch runs SW from the underside of the chin.  Other die scratches can be found on the obverse.  Obverse Stage B:  The obverse has been heavily abraded leaving numerous die scratches running from west to east in front of and behind the bust  Reverse Stage A:  A die gouge is centered above the TE in UNITED.  A die dent protrudes from the upper right T in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  The reverse has been heavily abraded.  A die scratch runs from south to north to the left of the Memorial ending at the bottom left corner of the E in UNITED.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short die gouge extends WSW from the rim above the right side of the R in TRUST.  Several die scratches run from north to south between the vest and the date.  Numerous die scratches run from west to east throughout the obverse.  Reverse:  The die was heavily abraded to remove die clash marks.  A small die gouge can be found above the right base of the Memorial.  A die scratch runs from SSW to NNE through the upper left dot in EPU.  Numerous other die scratches run throughout the reverse.

1970-D 1¢ WDDO-017       "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A partial horizontal bar of the 7 shows above the 7.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  The obverse is also an RPM variety listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1970-D 1¢ WRPM-004.  It is a D/D South.  Light die scratches run from north to south throughout the obverse.  Obverse Stage B:  The die has been heavily abraded.  Numerous die scratches run from SW to NE throughout the obverse.  Reverse Stage A:  A die crack runs from east to west along the bottom of the left memorial base running into the field.  A long and very heavily chipped die crack can be found on the first Memorial column.  Reverse Stage B:  Same as Stage A.

Description:  Strong doubling shows above the 7 and 0 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A short, diagonal die scratch can be found NW of the 1 in the date.  A short, vertical die gouge can be found under the top curve of the G in GOD.  A short, vertical die gouge can be found to the right of the center of the I of IN.  Obverse Stage B:  Parallel die scratches run NE from the top right and bottom right of the 1 in the date.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs from the upper right 1st T of STATES through the dot between the E and P in EPU.  A die scratch runs from the bottom right of the A in STATES to the top right of the P in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs SW from the I of UNITED to the Memorial.  Reverse Stage B:  Numerous die scratches run from NW to SE throughout the reverse.  A die chip can be found on the center of the 1st column.

Description:  A nice Class I CCW spread shows on the letters of LIBERTY, IGWT, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A curving die gouge runs parallel to the rim above the D in GOD, WE, and the first T in TRUST.  Two short, parallel die gouges run WSW from the rim to the right of the 2nd T in TRUST.  Two parallel die gouges runs NW from the rim to the left of the base of the bust.  Obverse Stage B:  The die gouge above the D in GOD, WE, and the first T in TRUST is the only remaining Stage A marker.  Die clash marks of the Memorial bays can be seen to the left of the back of the neck running through the TY in LIBERTY.  Numerous die scratches, mostly running north to south, can be seen throughout the obverse.  Reverse Stage A:  Two parallel die scratches run NW from the left side of the Memorial roof.  A die gouge protrudes from the right side of  the upper 6th column to the left of the top of the statue’s head.  A horizontal die scratch runs through the bottom off the UN in UNUM.  Reverse Stage B:  The reverse die has been heavily abraded.  The Stage A markers are gone. Numerous die scratches, mostly running north to south, can be seen throughout the reverse.

Description:  Doubling shows above the horizontal bar of the 7 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The die has been heavily abraded to remove die clash marks.  Clash marks from two Memorial bays can be seen to the left of the back of the neck and lower head.  Parallel die scratches run from west to east through the 197.  Numerous other die scratches running mostly SW to NE can be found throughout the obverse.  Reverse:  This is the same reverse die as seen on WDDO-018A.  The die has been heavily abraded to remove die clash marks.  Clash mark remnants can be seen in the 4th bay.  A die scratch runs from the upper right 1st T of STATES through the dot between the E and P in EPU.  A die scratch runs from the bottom right of the A in STATES to the top right of the P in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs SW from the I of UNITED to the Memorial.  Numerous other die scratches running mostly NW to SE can be found throughout the reverse.

1970-D 1¢ WDDO-025

Description:  Doubling (possible tripling) shows above the horizontal bar of the 7 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Parallel die scratches run from west to east above the date.  Three nearly parallel die scratches run from west to east above the ERTY in LIBERTY.  A light die scratch runs ENE from the tip of the nose.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the upper E in ONE.  Numerous die scratches run from NNE to SSE to the left of the Memorial, through the first two bays, and through the last two bays.  Other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

Description:  Doubling shows above the top of the 7 and below the bottom of the L in LIBERTY.  A spread towards the center shows on the letters of LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found NNE of the zero in the date.  A short, vertical die scratch can be found to the right of the bottom of the 2nd T in TRUST.  Reverse:  A short, vertical die scratch can be found just to the right of the bottom of the T in UNITED.  A die scratch runs south from the bottom of the E in UNITED.  Die scratches run from NW to SE through the ST in STATES.

1970-D 1¢ WDDO-027          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  Slight doubling shows under the tops of the seven and the zero in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse of this variety is also an RPM listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1970-D 1¢ WRPM-005.  It is a D/D Northeast.  A die scratch runs WSW from the bottom of the 9 in the date to the vest.  Reverse:  Two short die scratches run from WSW to ENE above the Memorial roof on the right side.  A die scratch connects the bottoms of the T and E in STATES.

Comments:  This variety achieved “Best Of” status on the merits of the RPM.  The doubled die is a nice little bonus!  While CONECA does list the RPM as RPM #6, they do not mention or record the doubled die.  The same is true of Coppercoins.
