1942-S 1¢ WRPM-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  S/S West

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Series of slanted die scratches through the 1 of the date.  Series of die scratches and gouges below the bust.  Two die scratches top left of the 1 of the date and one to the left of the 1 both going north to the tip of the nose.  Reverse:  A die dot to the left of the O of OF.  A die crack on the right side wheat kernels of the right wheat stalk going N/S from about the center of the wheat stalk and ending at the lower end.

1942-S 1¢ WRPM-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  S/S/S Southwest & West

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is a strong doubled die variety that is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1942-S 1¢ WDDO-001.  A die scratch extends SE from the lower right 1st T of TRUST.  A long die scratch extends north from the top of the R in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  Two long, parallel die scratches run north to south to the left of the T in CENT.  Two short die scratches run north from the top left T of CENT.  A short, strong die scratch runs from SSE to NNW to the left of the upper C in CENT.

1942-S 1¢ WRPM-003         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  S/S South

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Series of slanted die scratches between the G and O of GOD and O and D of GOD.  Short die scratch going N and S inside and centered in the D of GOD going north and south.  Obverse Stage B:  Stage A die scratches are all but gone with the short die scratch inside the D of GOD now faint.  Obverse Stage C:  Weaker secondary mint mark at center of bottom.  Reverse Stage A:  Die break through the upper portions of the left and upper left wheat stalk wheat lines with a crack running NW to the rim.  A second dot sized die break in the form of a dot just below.  Reverse Stage B:  The smaller dot sized die break has now grown and formed a crack connecting with the upper die break and continuing on to the rim.  Reverse Stage C:  Feeder finger marks show NW/SE at the upper area of the left wheat lines.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Die crack above the V.D.B.  Obverse Stage B:  Circulated coin.  Better specimen needed.  Obverse Stage C:  A second die crack is now seen to the right and above Stage A die crack.  Reverse Stage A:  First Reverse.  Die scratch below the left side of the crossbar of the second T of STATES. Multiple die cracks are seen on both left and right wheat stalks.  Reverse Stage B:  A large die chip is seen on the left wheat stalk lines.  Reverse Stage C:  Second Reverse.  Die dot under the C of CENT.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Long die scratch well below the second T of TRUST to the base of the bust near the rim.  Die dot at Lincoln’s neck.  Lathe scratches between the bust and the rim.  NW/SE die scratch at the bridge of the nose.  NW/SE die scratch to the left of the V of the designer’s initials.  N/S die scratches on the vest folds.  Strong secondary mint mark showing remnants of the curve to the north.  Obverse Stage B:  Weaker scratch at V.D.B.  North curve of secondary mint mark almost abraded away.  Obverse Stage C:  Short scratch south from the rim between the first T & R of TRUST.  Die chip in the field east of the E of WE.  Weak stage A and B markers.  Obverse Stage D:  Weak secondary mint mark.  Stage A markers are abraded away.  Obverse Stage E:  Very weak secondary mint mark.  Most markers are abraded away.  Reverse Stage A:   N/S die gouge at the lower left inside curve of the C of CENT.  Die chip (dot) below the upper curve of the C of CENT.  Die chips near the rim between the I and B of PLURIBUS.  Letters are abraded.  Reverse Stage B:  North by NW/S by SE die scratch against the right side of the O in ONE.  Very short NE/SW die scratch at the inside upper ell of the E in CENT.  Two N/S die scratches inside the C of CENT, connecting the upper and lower curves.  Reverse Stage C:  Stage B markers present but weaker.  Reverse Stage D:  Die chip near the rim above the dot located between PLURIBUS and UNUM.  All markers accept the die gouge in the C of CENT, which is weak, are gone.  Die chips at the lower opening of the N of UNITED.  Reverse Stage E:  The die gouge in the C of CENT has been reduced to a very small dimple.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs from SW to NE between the upper G and O in GOD.  A die scratch runs parallel to the rim under and to the left of the V of the designer’s initials.  Reverse:  Die scratches run south from the tops of the C, E, and T in CENT.  A die scratch runs through the upper E PL in EPU.

Description:  S/S West

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Short WSW/ENE die crack in the hair positioned below the D in GOD.  Obverse Stage B:  Longer die crack in the hair.  Northeast die crack from the lower area of the jacket folds running into the lapel.  Reverse Stage A:  N/S die scratch inside the C of CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  Large die chips on the right wheat stalk.  A die crack from the rim at 3:15 running onto and along the right wheat grains of the right wheat ear into the upper die chip continuing south to the next die chip, continuing south and then east back out towards the rim meandering south and S/E to the rim at 4:30.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die crack on the bust above the designer’s initials.  Another die crack above and to the right from the back to the lapel.  Reverse:  Small die chip just above the right wheat grains of the right wheat ear.  A die crack runs through the lower right wheat grains on the right wheat ear.

Description:  S/S West

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: Die chip (dot) centered between the lower area of WE and TRUST.  Strong die gouge through the right center of the U in TRUST.  Obverse Stage B: Die chip still present.  Die gouge at the U is TRUST is weaker.  Obverse Stage C: Die chip still present.  Die gouge at the U in TRUST is very weak.  Mint mark is slightly weaker only on the lower serif.  Reverse Stage A: Die crack from the upper left of the E in ONE running NW to the center of the second U in PLURIBUS.  Die crack on the right contour of the right wheat ear between 3:00 and 4:00.  A second minor die crack is positioned below in the right wheat grains.  Reverse Stage B: Die crack on the contour of the right wheat ear is stronger and extends SSE into the rim.  All other die cracks still present.  Reverse Stage C: New reverse die.  No prominent die marks.

Description:  S/S/S South & Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Short die scratch from the upper right of the U in TRUST.  Reverse:  Heavy die crack SSE from the rim at 10:00 running along the left wheat lines and left wheat grain of the left wheat ear.  The die crack branches into two die cracks at the wheat grains then exits at 8:30 and runs back to the rim.  Heavy die crack from the rim at 4:30 running north then staggering north along the left wheat grains of the right wheat ear.  Large die chip in the left side of the right wheat ear due east from the bottom of the T in CENT.

Description:  S/S Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  ESE/WNW die gouge through the designer’s initials.  Short die scratches on the bottom of the L in LIBERTY.  Die scratch between the rim and the back of the L in LIBERTY.  Long die scratch next to the rim running N/S above the L in LIBERTY with two smaller die scratches running SW to NE forming an X.  Reverse:  Die scratch running N/S to the west of the upper C of CENT.  Short die scratch running SW/NE from the inside of the lower O in ONE.  N/S die scratch is seen inside the lower opening of the S also inside the upper opening and between the legs of the R of PLURIBUS.  Very fine N/S die scratches in the field.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs SW from the bottom tip of the 9.  Light crack running west to east above the designer’s initials and ending near the center of the bust.  Reverse:  Die pitting can be found above the N in UNITED.  A die gouge (dot) can be found above the I in AMERICA.  Multiple die cracks on the right Wheat stalk running south from the top right kernel to the second to the bottom kernel then heading SW to the rim.  A second short die crack is seen on the center left kernels.

Description:  S/S East

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Vertical die scratch below the T in LIBERTY.  Circular die scratch pattern on bust centered in the neck area.  Die crack starting at the base of the bust near the bottom of the lapel running WNW passing well over the designer’s initials and out onto the field.  Obverse Stage B:  Die crack is stronger.  Reverse Stage A:  Feeder finger die scrapes run from north to south through the lower E in ONE.  Die crack on the right wheat stalk’s upper wheat lines running south on the right wheat kernels then turning east at the third from last kernel towards and ending at the rim.  Reverse Stage B:  Crack on right wheat stalk is stronger with a second smaller crack on the left side wheat kernels at about the center of the stalk.  A light crack on the left wheat stalk at the top left wheat kernels running south.
