Description: D/D/D Tilted (Rotated) & Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches west from the left side of the W in WE.  NE/SW die scratch at the right lower side of the E in WE.  Reverse:  Die scratches NW from the top of the mintmark.  Irregular die scratch pattern above the left side of the building.  NE/SW die scratch at the upper inside of the S in CENTS.

Description:  D/D South

Die Markers:  Obverse: None significant.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs SE from the right side of the E in FIVE.  A SSW/NNE die scratch can be found below the T in CENT.

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated) + possible D/Inverted D

Die Markers:  Obverse: None significant.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found above the left porch.  A small die gouge can be found inside the upper C in AMERICA.

Comments:  This variety is sure to be debated.  I believe that it is a D/Inverted D.  The curvature to the left of the primary D is raised and consistent with an inverted D.  A vertical bar of the D shows inside the primary D at a slight angle still consistent with the external curvature  I would welcome the opportunity to study an uncirculated EDS specimen of this variety.

Die Markers:  Obverse: None significant.  Reverse:  A nearly vertical die scratch can be found at the rim to the right of the upper mint mark.  A die scratch runs E/W above the LL in MONTICELLO.

1940-S 5¢ WRPM-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  S/S South

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A: ENE/WSW die crack across the shoulder.  ESE/WNW die scratches inside the 4 and 0 in the date.  Obverse Stage B: New obverse die.  ENE/WSW die crack on the shoulder positioned close to the bust.  NW/SE die crack on the head that turns west at the top of the head.  Reverse Stage A: Die scratch SW from about left center of the P in PLURIBUS.  Die scratches ENE from the right center area of the L in PLURIBUS.  Reverse Stage B: Large die chip on the right side of the roof.  Die crack beginning slightly right of the center of the dome and running north through the right side of the second U in PLURIBUS.

Description: D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers: Obverse: Old N/S die scratch through the upper queue. Short die scratches extend N/NW from the bridge of the nose and the forehead. E/W die scratch at the throat. Small die gouge between the N in IN and the G in GOD. Small die gouge above the inner right side of the G in GOD. Reverse: Concentric die scratch near the right E of the M in UNUM. Old N/S die scratches left of the building. Short NE/SW die scratch connects the serif of the L in PLURIBUS to its upright. Short N/S die scratch between the E and first L in MONTICELLO.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  NNW/SSE die crack runs through the hair on the upper back of the head.  A die crack runs NE from the rim at 6:00 into the lower bust and then curves ESE.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs NE from the bottom of the E to the R in AMERICA.  Die scratches run from NW to SE on both sides of the lower T in UNITED.

Description: S/S Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers: Obverse: E/W die crack at the top of the head. Strong die clash mark through the queue. Long broken die scratch through the bottom of the queue. Irregular die scratch through the front tip of the bust. Weak concentric die scratch near the rim above IGWT. NE/SW die scratch in front of the eye. Reverse: N/S and X-shaped die scratches above the right side of the building. Concentric die scratches at the rim above and E of UNUM. Die scratch extends S of the first U in PLURIBUS. N/S die scratch through the first O in MONTICELLO and the FI in FIVE. Large die gouge midway between the dome of the building and the LU in PLURIBUS. Die gouge east of the bottom of the E in EPU.
