1939-S 25¢ WDDO-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A CW spread from a pivot at about 11:00 shows on the date, IGWT, ERTY of LIBERTY, the queue, and the ribbon.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short die scratch runs east from the bottom of the top loop of the R in LIBERTY.  A die scratch connects the lower legs of the R in LIBERTY.  A die crack runs from the top of the forehead east into the hair.  A die crack runs through the upper left of the one in the date across the base of the bust and into the queue.  Reverse:  A die crack runs east through the upper RIBUS in PLURIBUS and down the eagle’s left wing ending below the R in AMERICA.  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing.  A short die crack can be found on the branch above the OL in DOLLAR.

1939-S 25¢ WDDO-002          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A CW spread from a pivot at about 12:00 shows on the date, the designer’s initials, IGWT, the lower queue, and the lower ribbon.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs east from the right side of the first 9 in the date.  A die scratch runs from the lower right of the G in GOD to the upper left of the U in TRUST.  A die scratch runs west from the left side of the I in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  The reverse is also an RPM variety listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1939-S 25¢ WRPM-001.  It is an S/S North.  A die crack runs from the rim through the upper NITED of UNITED.  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing ending in the field above the Q in QUARTER.  A very rough surface can be found in the lower MER of AMERICA.

Description:  A very close CW spread from a pivot at about 12:00 shows on the date, the designer’s initials, slightly on IGWT, and the bottom of the ribbon.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the one in the date.  Die scratches run east from the right side of the L in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs west from the top left side of the I in LIBERTY.  Die scratches run east from the lower right side of the E in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  None noted.

Description:  A close CW spread from a pivot at about 12:00 shows on the date, the designer’s initials, slightly on IGWT, and the lower ribbon.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found ESE of the bottom of the ribbon.  Die scratches run east from the right side of the L in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs west to east below the right side of the R in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs WNW from the top right of the Y in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  None noted.

Description:  A CW spread from a pivot at about 12:00 shows on the date, the designer’s initials, slightly on IGWT, and the lower ribbon.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two die scratches run SSE from the lower right E in WE.  A short SW/NE die scratch can be found between the lower L and I in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die crack can be found between the lower R in QUARTER and the D in DOLLAR.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs NW from the upper left U in TRUST.  A die scratch runs SSE from the R in TRUST.  A die gouge can be found to the upper right of the E in LIBERTY.  Die scratches run NW/SE between the lower E and R in LIBERTY,  Die scratches run NW/SE between the R and T in LIBERTY.  Die scratches run ESE from the right side of the Y in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  None noted.
