1940-D 25¢ WDDO-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A spread to the ESE shows on IN GOD WE TRUST and the upper front of the neck.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs SE from the lower left of the N of IN.  A die scratch runs SE from the lower first T in TRUST.  A die scratch runs NW from the top center of the W in WE.  Two die scratches run NW from the upper I of IN.  A die scratch runs NW/SE to the left of the chin.  Reverse:  A die crack runs through the PL in PLURIBUS.  A short die gouge runs SW from the center of the first S in STATES.  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing.

1940-D 25¢ WDDO-002

Description:  A close spread towards the center shows on IGWT, the date, and the bottom of the ribbon.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None noted.  Reverse:  The reverse is an RPM variety listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1940-D 25¢ WRPM-001.  It is a D/D South.  An E/W die crack runs through the RIBUS of PLURIBUS and then turns down and runs along the eagle's left wing.

1940-D 25¢ WDDO-003          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A close spread towards the ENE shows on IGWT while a close spread towards the center shows on LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the one in the date.  An E/W die scratch can be found to the right of the top of the four in the date.  A die crack runs across the base of the bust into the lower queue.  A die scratch runs WNW/ESE between the T and Y in LIBEERTY.  Reverse:  This obverse doubled die is paired with the same reverse die as WDDO-001, but it is a slightly later die state.  A die crack runs through the PL in PLURIBUS.  A short die gouge runs SW from the center of the first S in STATES.  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing.

1940-D 25¢ WDDO-004

Description:  A spread to the north shows on IN GOD WE TRUST.  Possible doubling shows on the right end of the underside of the horizontal crossbar of the 4.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A cluster of short die scratches can be found to the left of Washington’s nose.  Two short, parallel die scratches can be found above the D of GOD.  Reverse:  A die scratch extends northeast from the center right side of the 2nd L in DOLLAR.  A die scratch extends northeast from the leaves to the left of the arrow tips.
