1942 25¢ WDDO-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A CW spread from a pivot at about 1:00 shows on IGWT, the date, the lower queue, and slightly on the LIB of LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None noted.  A die crack runs NE through the forehead and into the hair.  A die crack runs across the base of the bust and into the lower ribbon.  Reverse:  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing.  A die crack runs east from the back of the eagle’s head to the upper left wing.

Description:  A CW spread from a pivot at about 1:00 shows on IGWT, the date, and the lower queue.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs ENE from the upper I in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing.  A die crack runs ENE from the back of the eagle’s head.  A die crack runs from under the F in OF to the upper left wing below the AM in AMERICA.

Description:  A close CW spread from a pivot at about 12:00 shows on the 42 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None significant.  Reverse:  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing.  A die crack runs ESE from the bottom of the 2nd S in STATES to the upper left wing.

Description:  A CCW spread shows on LIBERTY, IGWT, the bottom of the ribbon, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs SE from the R in TRUST.  A die scratch runs WNW/ESE between the 9 and 4 in the date.  Reverse:  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing.

Description:  A spread to the WNW shows on IGWT and the queue.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs north from bottom right of the R in TRUST.  A die scratch runs NNW from the top of the O in GOD.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs NW from the eagle’s beak.  A die scratch runs NW from the top of the eagle’s head through the lower left of the first U in UNUM.

1942 25¢ WDDO-007

Description:  A close Class I CW spread shows on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the bottom of the ribbon.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found just above the left side of the U in TRUST.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found to the left of the bottom of the 1st U in UNUM.  A small die gouge can be found just under the bottom of the wreath.  A die crack runs through the center of RIBUS to the top of the left wing.  A die crack runs through the top of the Q in QUARTER WNW to the bottom of the right wing.

Description:  An extremely strong CCW spread shows on USA, QUARTER DOLLAR, EPU, the leaves, and the branches.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None noted.  Reverse:  A die crack runs from URIBUS to the upper left wing and then down the wing to the I in AMERICA.

Description:  A CCW spread from a pivot at about 8:00 shows on STATES OF AMERICA, EPU, and slightly on the uppermost leaves of the right branch.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A strong die scratch runs WNW from the lower left 2 in the date.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs west from the upper right first S in STATES.  A die scratch can be found between the upper T and E in STATES.

1942 25¢ WDDR-003          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  Strong extrathickness shows on USA, EPU, QUARTER DOLLAR, and the lower leaves and branches.  The strongest extra thickness is on the lowerhalf of the reverse.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die crack runs east through the hair just above the forehead and through the hair near the top of the head.  Obverse Stage B:  A die crack runs across the base of the bust and into the lower ribbon.  Reverse Stage A:  None significant.  Reverse Stage B:  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing.  A die crack runs from the S in PLURIBUS down the eagle’s left wing.

Description:  An extremely strong CW spread shows on USA, EPU, QUARTER DOLLAR, the eagle’s talons, and the leaves and branches.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A heavy die scratch runs parallel to the rim above the RT in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die gouge (dot) can be found between the lower I and T in UNITED.

1942 25¢ WDDR-005          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  An extremely strong spread to the east shows on the eagle’s beak and neck, the eagle’s right leg and talons, the top of the left wing, the right wing, and some of the leaves especially on the right side.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs SE from the lower left of the B in LIBERTY.  A short strong die gouge runs NW from the upper left vertical bar of the T in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die gouge runs SW/NE between the T and A in STATES.  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing.  A die scratch connects the lower I and T in UNITED.
