1968-S 25¢ Pr WDDO-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  An extremely strong Class I CCW shows on LIBERTY, IGWT, the date, the designer’s initials, the lower queue, the upper hair details, and the eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs NW from the top of the chin.  A die scratch runs NE from the back of the queue ribbon NW from the mint mark.  Reverse:  A curved die scratch can be found on the lower D in DOLLAR.

1968-S 25¢ Pr WDDO-002

Description:  A spread to the north shows on IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None significant.  Reverse:  The reverse has the doubling from WMHR-002.  A small die gouge can be found between the S and T in STATES.

1968-S 25¢ Pr WMHR-001          Master Hub Doubling

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath with all doubling decreasing in spread from left to right.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die markers will vary on the individual working dies affected.  Reverse:  The leave directly to the left of the arrowheads is pointed at the top.  Die markers will vary on the individual working dies affected.

Comments:  Because this was a master hub it was intended to be used over a period of several years.  Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins.  Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear.  A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads.  On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse has a repunched mint mark listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1968-S 25¢ Pr WRPM-007.  It is an S/S West.  A small die gouge can be found just above the right side of the mint mark.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found on the eagle’s right wing to the right of the I in UNITED.

1968-S 25¢ Pr WDDR-002

Description:  A very close CCW spread shows on USA and QUARTER DOLLAR.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short, vertical die scratch can be found between the centers of the 1 and 9 of the date.  A small die gouge can be found between the bottoms of the R and T of LIBERTY.  Strong mechanical doubling showed on the specimen examined.  Reverse:  A small die gouge touches the bottom right side of the D in UNITED.  A die scratch can be found between the two leaves above the R in DOLLAR.
