1970-D 25¢ WDDO-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A very strong CCW spread from a pivot at about 10:00 shows on IGWT, the date, the designer’s initials, the lower queue, and the ERTY in LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A diagonal die gouge can be found in the field well north of the N of IN.  Reverse:  A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing.

1970-D 25¢ WDDO-002          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A very strong CCW spread from a pivot at about 9:00 shows on IN and TRUST, the date, the designer’s initials, the lower queue, and LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:   A die scratch runs SW from the lower left of the B in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs SW/NE to the left of the L in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs north from the lower right of the R in QUARTER.  A die scratch runs ESE from the center of the E to the D in UNITED.

1970-D 25¢ WMHR-001          Master Hub Doubling

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath with all doubling decreasing in spread from left to right.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die markers will vary on the individual working dies affected.  Reverse:  The leave directly to the left of the arrowheads is pointed at the top.  Die markers will vary on the individual working dies affected.

Comments:  Because this was a master hub it was intended to be used over a period of several years.  Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1972 from all three Mints including proof coins.  Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear.  A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads.  On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.









1970-D 25¢ WMHR-002          Master Hub Doubling

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath with all doubling decreasing in spread from left to right.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die markers will vary on the individual working dies affected.  Reverse:  The leave directly to the left of the arrowheads is rounded at the top.  Die markers will vary on the individual working dies affected.

Description:  A Class I CCW spread shows on USA, EPU, QUARTER DOLLAR, inside the eagle’s right wing, and on some of the lower leaves.  The spread is strongest between 7:00 and 8:00 while weakest between 1:00 and 2:00.

Die Markers:  Obverse:   A short die scratch runs SSW/NNE above the W in WE.  Reverse:  A short die scratch curves north from the back of the eagle’s head.

1970-D 25¢ WDDR-002          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A Class I CCW spread shows on USA, EPU, QUARTER DOLLAR, inside the eagle’s wings, and on the wreath.

Die Markers:  Obverse:   A die scratch runs SE from the lower right of the R in TRUST.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs south from the lower bar of the F in OF.

Description:  A CW spread from a pivot at about 1:00 shows on UNITED, AMERICA, and QUARTER DOLLAR.  A spread towards the center of the wreath and QUARTER DOLLAR is from the doubled master hub listed as WMHR-001.

Die Markers:  Obverse:   None significant.  Reverse:  A strong die gouge runs NNW/SSE to the right of the eagle’s left leg.  A small die gouge can be found to the left of the U in UNITED.

Description: Type F over Type G reverse (WMHR-001 over WMHR-002). Moderate spread towards the center shows on QUARTER DOLLAR, the branches, and slightly on UNITED and AMERICA.

Die Markers: Obverse: Two die gouges left of the top of the R in LIBERTY. Small die gouge above the mintmark D. Reverse: Die gouge right of the last A in AMERICA. Die gouge right of the E in AMERICA.
