1941 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong Class I CCW spread shows on the letters of IGWT where the doubling fades on the upper half of the letters.  Doubling also shows on the letters of LIBERTY, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Light die scratches run from SW to NE through the letters of WE.  Obverse Stage B:  A die crack runs from west to east across the base of the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  None noted.  Reverse Stage B:  None noted.

Comments:  The secondary images fade as you move towards the rim on those design elements closest to the rim indicating that the misaligned hubbing took place on an early hubbing of the die.  This characteristic helps in distinguishing this variety from 1941 1¢ WDDO-002 which is also a Class I variety.














1941 1¢ WDDO-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong Class I CCW spread shows on the letters of IGWT, LIBERTY, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge protrudes from inside the upper loop of the 9.  A small die gouge can be found just above the 4 in the date.  Reverse:  None noted.

1941 1¢ WDDO-003         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A Class V CW spread from a pivot at approximately 4:00 shows on the letters of LIBERTY and the letters of IN GOD WE.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short diagonal die scratch can be found to the upper right of the W in WE.  Reverse:  None noted.

1941 1¢ WDDO-004         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Very strong Class VI extra thickness shows on the date and LIBERTY.  Moderate extra thickness shows on the letters of IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short die scratch runs SW from the right side of the bottom of the O in GOD.  A short but strong die scratch runs from WSW to ENE between GOD and WE.  A die gouge can be found north of the 4.  A die gouge can be found on the lower right part of the bust.  Reverse:  Parallel die scratches run from SW between the E and P of EPU.  A strong die gouge runs from SW to NE through the lower D in UNITED.  A short die gouge runs NNE from the center of the right side of the 1st A in AMERICA.

Description:  A wide Class IV spread to the NE shows on the 19 of the date, the TY of LIBERTY, and Lincoln’s earlobe.

Description:  A strong notch shows on the upper right second T in TRUST and there is a short bar above the T.  The lower S in TRUST is also doubled.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short diagonal die scratch is present in the field well north of the upper right Y in LIBERTY, west of the bottom of the ear.  Reverse:  A strong die gouge is present through the upper left wheat lines into the field north of the wheat ear.

Description:  Doubling shows on the last T in TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A diagonal die scratch is present inside D in GOD.  A short die gouge is present below lower right G in GOD.  Small die gouges are present on the lapel under the bow tie. Reverse:  A die scratch is present connecting the lower U and M in UNUM.  Two short die scratches run NNW from the top of the right wheat ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short die gouge runs SSW/NNE below the chin.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found just above the intersection of the diagonal bar and the right vertical bar of the N in ONE.  A die scratch runs SSW from the bottom of the second U in PLURIBUS.

Description:  An extra eyelid shows to the east of the normal eyelid.
