1971 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A very strong Class II spread towards the rim shows on the letters of LIBERTY and IGWT.  A spread towards the north shows on the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Several short die scratches running from north to south can be found below the ER of LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  Numerous die scratches running from north to south can be found in front of the head and die scratches running from NNW to SSE can be found in back of the head.  Reverse Stage A:  Two short, parallel die scratches run from WSW to ENE on the roof above the 4th column.  A die scratch runs from WNW to ESE between the lower A and T in STATES.  Reverse Stage B:  A horizontal die scratch can be found below the LURIB of PLURIBUS.  Two parallel die scratches run from WSW to ENE below the last S of STATES and the O in OF.  Two die scratches run from NW to SE through the upper T in CENT.  Numerous die scratches run from east to west through the Memorial.  Other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

1971 1¢ WDDO-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A nice Class I CW spread shows on the letters of LIBERTY, IGWT, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs ESE from the rim above the 1st T in TRUST.  A light die scratch runs from SW to NE to the left of the lower W in WE.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A markers are gone.  The doubling is very “mushy” in appearance.  Reverse Stage A:  A small die gouge can be found above the right Memorial base.  Reverse Stage B:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the last Memorial column.

1971 1¢ WDDO-003         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A very nice Class I CCW spread shows on the letters of LIBERTY, IGWT, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A strong die gouge protrudes from the rim below the 2nd 1 in the date.  A die gouge can be found below the lower right R in TRUST.  A die crack runs from the back of the ear through the hair and into the field below the E in WE.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found below the right end of the Memorial.

1971 1¢ WDDO-004         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A nice Class I CCW spread shows on the letters of LIBERTY, IGWT, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A long die scratch runs from SW to NE below the R in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  A die scratch runs ENE from the top of the L in LIBERTY.  Parallel die scratches run from SW to NE in the field to the right of Lincoln’s eye.  Die scratches run from WSW to ENE above the Y in LIBERTY.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Obverse Stage C:  Most Stage B die scratches are very weak or gone.  A strong die scratch running WSW to ENE can still be seen above the Y in LIBERTY.  A vertical die clash mark can be found above the left side of the 7.  A die crack runs NNE from the top of the ear to the top of the head below the W in WE.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs SW from the lower right N of ONE.  Reverse Stage B:  Two parallel die scratches run NNW from the top of the 2nd U in PLURIBUS.  V-Shaped die scratches can be found to the right of the 2nd S in STATES.  Parallel die scratches run from SW to NE through the lower NI in UNITED.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Reverse Stage C:  The Stage B die scratches are weak or gone.  Die cracks run down the first two columns and the last two columns.

Description:  Doubling shows above the 7 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A strong die gouge runs north from the rim to the right of the last one in the date.  Reverse:  A horizontal die scratch can be found near the bottom of the 5th Memorial bay.

Description:  Doubling shows under the L in LIBERTY, above the 7 in the date, and slightly above the last one in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A strong die gouge can be found at the rim to the right of the 2nd T in TRUST.  A very strong die dent can be found between the designer’s initials and the rim.  Reverse:  A strong die gouge runs WSW from the rim above the U in UNITED.

Description:  Doubling shows above the 7 and slightly above the last one in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge runs SW from the bottom left of the L in LIBERTY to the rim.  Reverse:  A small die gouge touches the upper right side of the 5th column.  A die scratch runs NNW from the tip of the right cornice.
