1944-S 1¢ WDDO-002          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Strong Class VI extra thickness shows on the date, especially the lower 9.  Extra thickness also shows on LIBERTY and to a lesser extent on IGWT.  A nice Class II separation line shows on the lower 9 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the lower Y in LIBERTY.  A die gouge can be found below the O in GOD.  A short die gouge runs from WSW to ENE in the field to the right of the bowtie.  A die scratch runs SW from the top of the 1 in the date to the vest.  Reverse:  A short die gouge runs from WSW to ENE between the upper O and N in ONE.  A die scratch runs WSW from the upper 1st S in STATES.

1944-S 1¢ WDDO-003

Description:  An extra eyelid shows east of the normal eyelid and an extra eyelid shows above the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also a repunched mint mark (RPM) listed in the Wexler Files as WRPM-005 and in the CONECA Files as RPM #5, an S/S West.  A die scratch extends WSW from the top of the I of IN and a short die scratch extends NE from the center right side of the I of IN.  Reverse:  A die scratch extends NE from the upper right U of UNITED through the top left corner of the N of UNITED.  Two parallel die scratches run south from the center of the 1st S in STATES through the E in AMERICA.

1944-S 1¢ WDDO-005 - QUESTIONABLE LISTING

Description:  Eye and eyelid doubled with spread to the west.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two strong diagonal die scratches under eye and on lower nose.  Die clash marks above tie, from vest to left of the 1 and behind neck. Reverse:  None noted.

Comments:  I would like to see a copy of this die for further examination to determine if this truly represents a doubled die.  No doubled eye or eyelid could be discerned from the photos in the Wexler files.  This listing may end up replaced if it remains unproven.

Description:  A strong extra eyelid can be found SSE of the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs SW from the lower left N of IN.  A die gouge curves from north to south from the top back of the forehead into the hair.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs NE from the bottom right E of EPU to the dot.  A die scratch runs ENE from the bottom right E to the lower left N of CENT.  A die scratch runs SW from the lower left 2nd S of STATES.  A short, vertical die gouge can be found above the left side of the N in UNITED.  A die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the upper T in UNITED.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found south of the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Serif “S” mint mark.  The obverse of this variety is an RPM listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1944-S 1¢ WRPM-009.  It is an S/S West.  Two short die scratches below the N of IN and the G of GOD.  Die gouge (dot) in the field to the left of the back of the bust.  Reverse:  Short die gouge inside the lower portion of the first A of AMERICA.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found below the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Large S mint mark.  The obverse of this variety is also an RPM that is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1944-S 1¢ WRPM-001.  It is an S/S/S East & Serifs.  N/S die scratches through the BE of LIBERTY.  Die scratch running south from the neck to the top of the bowtie.  Long die scratch from the bottom of the bowtie running south ending to the left and below the date.  Reverse:  N/S die scratch at the lower left inside of the N in CENT.  Diagonal die scratch is seen inside the upper N of UNITED.  A small die gouge on the left side and tucked under the upper arm of the T of UNITED.

Description:  Strong extra thickness spread towards the center shows on EPU, the dots, both upper wheat ears, and both wheat stems.  The strongest spread is on the upper half of the reverse.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found well east of the tip of the nose.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found inside the upper U in UNITED.  A small die gouge can be found NW of the top left of the M in AMERICA.

Description:  Extremely strong Class VI extra thickness shows on EPU, the dots, both wheat ears and stems, and the outer most letters in OF AMERICA.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the T in LIBERTY.  Two circular die scratches run parallel to the rim through the letters of IN GOD WE.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found to the left of the upper E in ONE.

Description:  Light extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, both dots, and upper right wheat ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Small die gouge under the 9 in the vest and a light die gouge starting at the vest and running northeast about halfway to the 9.  Reverse:  Small die gouge by N in ONE.

Description:  A close Class II spread towards the center shows on both upper wheat ears.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Several horizontal die scratches run through the upper letters of WE.  Reverse:  Two parallel die scratches run south from the top left of the T in CENT.  Two parallel die scratches run north from the right side of the 2nd A in AMERICA.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.
