1963-D 1¢ WDDO-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A CCW spread from a tilted hub shows inside the lower 3 and below the 3.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Two parallel die scratches run SSW to NNE to the right of the beard and lips.  Two parallel die scratches run NW to SE from above the bowtie to the field above the 1 in the date.  Two parallel die scratches run NE from the top of the Y in LIBERTY.  The lower curve of the secondary 3 is very strong below the primary 3.  Obverse Stage B:  The die scratches from above the Y are short and weak.  Other Stage A die scratches are gone.  A die scratch runs NW to SE from the right of the front curl of hair ending to the right of the nose.  The secondary 3 below the primary 3 is weak.  Obverse Stage C:  The die scratches from the Y are extremely weak, but still visible.  The Stage B die scratch to the right of the upper profile is gone.  A small die gouge can be found to the left of the 1.  Small die gouges can be found below the beard and to the right of the beard.  The secondary 3 below the primary 3 is no longer visible.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs WSW to ENE below the E PLU of E PLURIBUS UNUM.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found in the field just below the Memorial to the right of the right post.  Two parallel die scratches run west to east at the top of the 7th Memorial bay.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches are no longer visible.  A die crack runs down the right cornice.  A die chip can be found near the top of the 12th Memorial column.  A die chip can be found at the top of the 1st Memorial column.  Reverse Stage C:  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the bottom of the C in CENT.  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the N in CENT.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found south of the main eyelid.  Doubling shows on the upper right side of the 2nd T in TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs SW to NE through the lower right R of TRUST.  A die scratch runs SW from the lower left 1 to the vest.  Numerous die scratches run SW to NE on the bottom right point of the bust.  Reverse:  Die scratches run NNW from the top of the left cornice.  A die scratch runs SW to NE inside the upper D of UNITED.  A die scratch runs NNW from near the right end of the Memorial roof.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found south of the main eyelid.  Doubling shows on the upper right side of the S and 2nd T in TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short, diagonal die gouge can be found between the upper I and B of LIBERTY.  A die gouge touches the center left side of the E in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found to the left of the U in UNITED.  A small die gouge touches the left side of the 3rd column near the center.  Two small die gouges (dots) can be found almost touching the right side of the 1st column ⅓ and ½ of the way from the bottom.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found south of the main eyelid.  Doubling shows on the upper right side of the 2nd T in TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the lower E in WE.  Two parallel die scratches run NNW to SSE in the field to the right of the forehead.  Reverse:  A short, diagonal die scratch can be found between the lower A and T of STATES.  Three short, parallel die scratches extend east from the lower right 2nd A in AMERICA.  A die scratch runs north to south between the N and T of CENT.

Description:  A clockwise spread shows on the R, U, and 2nd T of TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Abrasion or die deterioration doubling can be found to the right of the vest and left of the lower 1 in the date.  Reverse:  A light die scratch runs SW from the bottom of the 2nd S in STATES to the top of the 2nd U of PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs SW from the bottom of the 1st U in PLURIBUS to the top of the 2nd  U in UNUM.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found south of the main eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short, diagonal die gouge can be found just right of the lower 6.  Reverse:  A light die scratch runs NW from the upper left 1st Memorial column to the bottom of the N in UNITED.  Two parallel die scratches run SE from the upper right 2nd T of STATES to the upper E of STATES.  Two parallel die scratches run SE from the bottom of the L in PLURIBUS to the top of the N in UNUM.
