1951-D 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong Class V CCW spread from a pivot at approximately 6:00 shows on the letters of IGWT and also on LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A long die scratch runs SSW from the upper left T in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  The die is heavily abraded and the Stage A marker is no longer visible.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs from the upper left O in ONE to the first U in PLURIBUS.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratch is gone.  A short die crack extends north from the top of the left wheat ear.

1951-D 1¢ WDDO-002

Description: Shows an extra eyelid to the southeast.

Die Markers: Obverse: The obverse is also an RPM which is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1951-D 1¢ WRPM-021. Stage A: A mostly E-W oriented die scratch runs between the central 5 and into 1 in the date. Light, E-W oriented die scratches show to the left of the mint mark and through the left side of the date. Similar E-W oriented die scratches show below the chin. Light die scratches run east from the front of Lincoln’s nose, eyebrow and forehead. Light, SW-NE oriented die scratches run through the TRU in TRUST. A strong die gouge shows at the rim NE of the R in TRUST. Stage B: All Stage A die markers except for the doubled eye are worn away. The doubled eyelid is much less visible in this die stage and is nearly worn away. A light die clash shows in front of the neck. A die crack curves NW above the back of the eyebrow. A faded series of SW-NE oriented die scratches show behind most of Lincoln’s lower bust. Light, SW-NE oriented die scratches show on the neck below the ear. Stage C: All previous die stage markers are extremely weak or worn away except for the die crack NW of the eyebrow, which now joins a strong E-W oriented die crack running through the central forehead. The doubled eyelid is essentially invisible in this die stage. A faded die gouge shows to the right of the Y in LIBERTY. Reverse: Stage A: Scattered concentric die scratches show below the UM in UNUM. A light die scratch curves SE from the central crossbar of the E in ONE. Light, concentric die scratches show to the SE of OF. Stage B: Numerous NW-SE die scratches show throughout many areas of the reverse. A long, NW-SE oriented die scratch runs between and below the I and B in PLURIBUS. A series of die gouges show right of the E in UNITED. Scattered die gouges show in the field below the RIC in AMERICA. More die gouges show between the N and T in CENT. Stage C: A pair of die gouges show below and between the IC in AMERICA. A die gouge shows along the lower left edge of the right wheat stalk, SE of the last S in STATES. A series of NW-SW oriented die scratches run through the upper T in CENT.

Description: Extra eyelid south of the primary eyelid. 

Die Markers: Obverse: The obverse of this variety is also a repunched mint mark that is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1951-D 1¢ WRPM-048. A strong series of die cracks show NW of the back of the eye and across Lincoln’s temple. A long die crack runs mostly NE into Lincoln’s lower bust left of the VDB initials. Reverse: Die cracks and chips show on the upper E in ONE. A die gouge shows to the right of the lower N in CENT. Heavy die cracks show on the T in CENT.

Description:  An extra eyelid shows just south of the primary eyelid. 

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also listed as WRPM-078 (formerly listed by John Wexler as OMM #2 before the original Wexler files were transferred to CONECA and originally listed in The RPM Book by Wexler/Miller in 1983 as RPM#15).  Die scratch on lower front of vest south of 1.  Reverse:  Strong die scratch through the right wheat stem northeast to right of the second A in AMERICA.

Description: Tripled eyelid to the southeast.

Die Markers: Obverse: The obverse is also an RPM which is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1951-D 1¢ WRPM-014. Stage A:  NNW-SSE oriented die scratches run in front of the eyebrow and through the nose with one particularly long die scratch extending into the 9 of the date.  Numerous, NNW-SSE oriented die scratches run from the underside of the chin into and left of the 1 in the date. The previously mentioned die scratches are overlaid by a single SW-NE oriented die scratch left of the 1 in the date.  A NW-SE oriented die scratch shows in the field right of the last T in TRUST.  Numerous light die scratches run NW from Lincoln’s upper back, SE and left of the Y in LIBERTY.   Stage B: Most of the Stage A die markers are extremely weak or worn away. Traces of the die scratches under the nose and through the 9 in the date are still visible. A long, curved die crack shows on the central bust, NE and above the VDB initials.  The extra eyelids are no longer clearly visible and are mushy in appearance.  Reverse: Stage A (First Reverse):  A light die crack runs to the rim from the upper left wheat at approximately 9:30.  A pattern of die damage shows inside the C in CENT. A die gouge shows along the central left edge of the right vertical bar of the N in CENT.   Stage B (Second Reverse): Two, light die scratches run north from the left wheat tip.  A short SW-NE oriented die scratch grazes the upper right edge of the C in CENT.  Concentric die scratches run through the last A in AMERICA.  A long die scratch runs SE from the central left arm of the last A in AMERICA.

Description: Doubling shows as a doubled eyelid to the southeast.

Die Markers: Obverse: The obverse is also an RPM which is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1951-D 1¢ WRPM-022. Stage A: Light NW-SE oriented die scratches run through the 5 in the date. A die scratch runs SW from the lower B in LIBERTY. A die gouge shows in the field below and between the TY in LIBERTY. Numerous light die scratches show above the TY in LIBERTY and behind the head. A stronger die scratch runs along the back of the hair, NE of the Y in LIBERTY. A tiny die gouge (dot) shows behind Lincoln’s lower hair. Stage B: Most Stage A die markers are faded, but visible. Reverse: Stage A: A die gouge (dot) shows below the lower curve of the C in CENT. A series of die scratches run ENE from the lower opening in the C in AMERICA. A pair of light, but long die scratches run ENE from the upper right corner of the N in CENT into the upper right wheat stalk. A N-S oriented die scratch shows at the base of the upper opening of the N in CENT. Stage B: Most Stage A die markers are still visible.
