1956 1¢ Pr WDDO-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong spread towards the center along with extra thickness shows on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two parallel die scratches run NW to SE through the bottom of the 5.  A strong die gouge can be found to the right of the bottom of the ear and another on the collar to the right of the Y in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die gouge (dot) can be found between the tops of the O and F in OF.  A short, strong die scratch curves south from the underside of the top of the diagonal bar of the N in ONE.  X-shaped die scratches can be found above and between the E and N of CENT.  Two die scratches curve NNE from the top of the C in CENT.  Die scratches curve NNW from the tops of the second T and the E in STATES.

Description:  A strong spread towards the center shows on IGWT with four distinct images visible on the lower D in GOD.  A spread to the center also shows on LIBERTY and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Broken hub on the lower 6.  A die crack is present under the E in WE.  Die chip center of E in WE.  A die gouge is present on the chin.  Reverse:  Diagonal die scratch on the upper left C in CENT.

Description:  A close spread towards the center shows on IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found below the five in the date.  A strong die scratch runs NNE from the upper chin.  Nearly horizontal die scratches can be found north of the one in the date.  Numerous heavy die cracks run throughout the hair.  Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1956 1¢ WDDR-003.  Extra thickness shows on the letters of EPU, both of the dots, both of the upper wheat ears, and both of the wheat stems.  A small die gouge touches the bottom center of the diagonal bar of the N in ONE.  A small die gouge touches the upper center of the diagonal bar of the N in CENT.  Numerous die scratches run from NNW to SSE through the letters in CENT.  A large die chip can be found on the lower T in CENT.

1956 1¢ WDDR-001         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Strong extra thickness shows on the letters of EPU, both of the dots, both of the upper wheat ears, and both of the wheat stems.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A long die scratch runs north from the top left R of LIBERTY to the N of IN.  Two nearly parallel die scratches runs south from the bottom of the E in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE between the lower 1 and 9 of the date.  A short die scratch runs west to east between the upper 9 and 5 of the date.  Obverse Stage B:  LDS.  All Stage A die scratches are no longer visible.  Reverse Stage A:  Parallel die scratches run from SSW to NNE between the R and I of PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs SW from the bottom of the S in PLURIBUS.  A strong die gouge (dot) can be found just above the A in STATES.  A die gouge can be found below and between the M and E of AMERICA.  A die scratch runs SW from the lower left 1st S of STATES.  A die scratch runs NE from the upper right 1st A of AMERICA to the D of UNITED.  Reverse Stage B:  LDS.  The die scratches between the R and I of PLURIBUS are weaker, but still visible.  Most of the other Stage A die scratches are no longer visible.  Both of the die gouges are still visible.

1956 1¢ WDDR-003

Description:  Extra thickness shows on the letters of EPU, both of the dots, both of the upper wheat ears, and both of the wheat stems.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  The obverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1956 1¢ WDDO-008.  A close spread towards the center shows on IGWT.  A die gouge can be found below the five in the date.  A strong die scratch runs NNE from the upper chin.  Nearly horizontal die scratches can be found north of the one in the date.  Numerous heavy die cracks run throughout the hair.  Obverse Stage B:  A new obverse die has been introduced which is not a doubled die.  A strong die clash mark can be found at the front of the throat.  Reverse Stage A:  A small die gouge touches the bottom center of the diagonal bar of the N in ONE.  A small die gouge touches the upper center of the diagonal bar of the N in CENT.  Numerous die scratches run from NNW to SSE through the letters in CENT.  A large die chip can be found on the lower T in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die markers are weaker, but many are still visible.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found in the hair at the top of the head below the W in WE.  Reverse:  A die gouge (dot) can be found between the centers of the I and B in PLURIBUS.

Description:  A strong spread towards the center shows on the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM, both of the dots, both of the upper wheat ears and stems, the letters of AMERICA, and the upper letters of ONE.  The lower right wheat ear and the right wheat stem are tripled.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None noted.  Reverse:  A die gouge (dot) can be found below the C in CENT.  A die gouge (dot) can be found midway between the lower left 1st A in AMERICA and the bottom of the left wheat stem.  A die gouge (dot) can be found below the lower right wheat stem.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found south of the RT in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  Several die scratches run south from the bottom of the T in CENT to the top of the 2nd T in STATES.  Other N/S die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.
