1957-D 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A spread towards the north shows on the letters of LIBERTY and the 19 in the date.  The spread on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST and the hair at the top of the head is towards the center of the die.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A short, diagonal die gouge to the left of the upper T in LIBERTY.  A die gouge runs parallel to the upper left of the Y in LIBERTY.  A short, strong die gouge runs NW from the top center of the W in WE to the rim.  A die scratch runs SW from the underside of the top of the 7.  Obverse Stage B:  A die scratch runs N/S through the 9 in the date.  Obverse Stage C:  A die scratch runs NE from the top of the T in LIBERTY.  Strong die pitting runs through and below the date, and on the lower right corner of the bust.  Obverse Stage D:  The Stage C die scratch is no longer visible.  The die pitting through the date and lower right bust is very weak.  A die chip can be found inside the lower B in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage E:  A die gouge runs WNW from the top left of the R in TRUST.  Parallel die scratches run SW/NE above the Y in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage F:  A die chip can be found inside the upper 9.  Obverse Stage G:  The obverse die has been heavily abraded.  Numerous SW/NE die scratches run throughout the obverse fields.  Reverse Stage A:  Numerous die scratches run from north to south throughout the entire reverse.  Reverse Stage B:  Same as Stage A.  Reverse Stage C:  Same as Stage B.  Reverse Stage D:  A strong die chip runs from the upper left wheat lines on the left wheat ear to the rim.  Reverse Stage E:  New reverse die (2nd reverse).  Parallel die scratches run east from the upper left wheat ear to the C in CENT.  Parallel die scratches run east from the upper left wheat T in CENT to the upper right wheat ear.  Parallel E/W die scratches run through the upper CA in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage F:  A die chip can be found on the top left wheat kernel in the left wheat stalk.  Reverse Stage G:  The reverse die has been heavily abraded.  Numerous NW/SE die scratches run throughout the reverse.

1957-D 1¢ WDDO-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A spread towards the north shows on the letters of LIBERTY.  The 19 in the date is spread slightly towards the south.  The letters of IGWT have a CCW spread.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  The obverse is an RPM variety listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1957-D 1¢ WRPM-005.  It is a D/D South.  A die scratch runs NE from the top of the 1 in the date.  Obverse Stage B:  Long parallel die scratches run from SW to NE through the RT in LIBERTY.  Parallel die scratches run from SW to NE to the right of the lower ear.  Obverse Stage C:  Strong die scratches run SW from the back of the head.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Obverse Stage D:  A nearly horizontal die crack runs through the hair on the upper back of the head.  A nearly horizontal die crack runs from the hair well into the upper forehead.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs SSE from the center of the E in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage B:  Same as Stage A but weaker.  Reverse Stage C:  Parallel die scratches run SSE from the N in UNITED to the upper right of the O in OF.  A horizontal die scratch runs through the top of the letters in STATES.  Reverse Stage D:  A die gouge can be found to the left of the upper E in EPU.

1957-D 1¢ WDDO-003          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A spread towards the south shows on the letters of LIBERTY and the 19 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found south of the tip of the nose.  This die gouge can be found on all known stages of the obverse die.  Die scratches run WNW/ESE near the bottom of the center fold in the vest.  A die scratch runs SW/NE above the 9 in the date.  A die scratch runs SSW/NNE north of the TY in LIBERTY.  Several die scratches run SE from the underside of the chin.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A die markers are present but weaker.  Obverse Stage C:  The Stage A & B die scratches have been abraded away except for those near the bottom of the center fold in the vest.  Numerous die scratches run SW/NE throughout the obverse.  Obverse Stage D:  A die crack runs NNE from the left side of the base of the bust through the arm and shoulder.  All Stage C die scratches have been abraded away.  Obverse Stage E:  Remnants of a die clash run between the one in the date and the vest.  Reverse Stage A:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the upper left wheat ear.  A die gouge can be found to the right of the left wheat stalk left of the center of the C in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die markers are present but weaker.  A small die gouge can be found south of the left side of the A in STATES.  Reverse Stage C:  Probable new reverse die.  A die scratch runs NNE from the top right of the T in UNITED.  Nearly horizontal die scratches can be found to the left of the C in CENT.  A die scratch runs ESE from the top right of the E in ONE.  Reverse Stage D:  The reverse die has been heavily abraded removing all Stage C die scratches except for a few die scratched to the left of the C in CENT which are now very weak.  A small die gouge can be found below the I in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage E:  Same as Stage D.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found below the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Heavy die scratches run SW/NE between GOD and the top of the head.  Numerous die scratches mostly SW/NE can be found throughout the obverse.  A die chip can be found in the lower B of LIBERTY.  Reverse:  Numerous light die scratches mostly N/S can be found throughout the reverse.

Description:  Doubling shows on the ERTY of LIBERTY, IN GOD, and the 19 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A curving die scratch runs SW/NE through the collar and the neck.  This die scratch is present on all three stages.  Obverse Stage B:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the upper lip.  Obverse Stage C:  A die chip can be found inside the upper 9.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs SSW from the rim to the right of the E in EPU to the top of the C in CENT.  Numerous N/S die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.  Reverse Stage B:  The die scratch from the rim is no longer visible.  The other die scratches are very weak.  Reverse Stage C:  A die gouge (dot) can be found to the left of the right wheat ear.  A die crack runs down the lower half of the T in CENT.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found below the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Remnants of a die clash can be found to the right of the throat.  Several die scratches run N/S to the left of the lower back of the head.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs south from the P in PLURIBUS to the O in ONE.  A die scratch runs NNW/SSE between the U and N in UNITED.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

Description:  A spread towards the south shows on the ERTY of LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  The obverse also has an RPM variety that is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1957-D 1¢ WRPM-010.  It is a D/D Tilted (Rotated).  A die scratch runs SW/NE on the lower front of the vest.  Two nearly vertical die scratches can be found to the right of the Y in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  Large die chips can be found in the upper 9 and 5 in the date.  Obverse Stage C:  The same as Stage B.  Reverse Stage A:  Parallel die scratches run south from the I in PLURIBUS.  Die scratches run south from the bottom of the C in AMERICA.  A die gouge can be found to the left of the lower right wheat stalk SE of the second A in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die markers are present but weaker.  A die crack runs along the right side of the lower right wheat stalk.  Reverse Stage C:  The die crack in the lower right wheat stalk now extends outward to the rim.

1957-D 1¢ WDDO-008          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A spread towards the south shows on the ERTY of LIBERTY and the 9 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs SW from the bottom of the 9.  A die scratch runs NNE from the top of the one.  A die scratch runs south from between the E and R of LIBERTY curving SSW towards the bottom of the die scratch.  Obverse Stage B:  A die chip can be found in the upper 9.  A long die scratch runs SSW from the back of the head to the left of the ear passing between the T and Y in LIBERTY and running all the way to the rim at about 8:00.  A long die scratch runs N/S through the left side of the B in LIBERTY.  A long die scratch runs SW from the bottom right of the N of IN.  Obverse Stage C:  The Stage A & B die scratches have been abraded away or are very weak except for the long die scratch from the back of the head.  A small die gouge can be found above the 5 in the date.  Obverse Stage D:  A long die scratch runs SW from the bottom right of the N of IN passing between the B and E in LIBERTY and extending out to the rim.  A long die scratch runs NNE from the top of he I in LIBERTY to the I of IN.  Reverse Stage A:  Two die scratches run SE from the top right of the E in ONE running through the top right of the T in CENT to the tops of the E and S in STATES.  A die scratch runs SE from the bottom of the first U in UNUM to the top right of the E in ONE.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die markers are present but much weaker.  Remnants of a die clash run from the bottom left of the E in ONE to the top right of the N in CENT.  Numerous die scratches run NW/SE throughout the reverse.  Reverse Stage C:  The reverse die has been heavily abraded.  Numerous die scratches run SW/NE throughout the reverse.  Reverse Stage D:  Same as Stage C.

Description:  A spread towards the west shows on the letters of LIBERTY while a spread to the east shows on the 19 in the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  The obverse also has an RPM variety listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1957-D 1¢ WRPM-095.  It is a D/D Tilted Rotated.  Parallel die scratches run NE from the top and bottom of the bowtie.  A die gouge (dot) is visible in the field to the right of the eye.  This die gouge can be seen on all stages.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches are no longer visible.  Numerous die scratches run SW/NE to the left and right of the bust.  Obverse Stage C:  The same as Stage B.  Obverse Stage D:  Remnants of a die clash can be found to the left of the back of the neck.  A small die gouge can be found above the right side of the E in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage E:  A die crack runs NW/SE through the left side of the upper arm.  Reverse Stage A:  A strong feeder finger gouge runs SSE from between the left dot and the P in PLURIBUS.  A long die scratch runs south from the top left of the T in CENT to the A in STATES.  Other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die markers are very weak.  Die clash marks can be found between the lower C and E in CENT and also connecting the E in ONE to the N in CENT.  Die scratches run NW/SE between the C and E in CENT.  A die scratch runs from the first U in UNUM through the E in ONE.  A die scratch runs from the second U in UNUM to the top of the T in CENT.  A die scratch curves SSE from the M in UNUM running to the left of the right wheat ear.  Reverse Stage C:  Most die scratches between the C and E in CENT now run SW/NE.  Numerous SW/NE die scratches can be found throughout the left half of the reverse.  Reverse Stage D:  Numerous die scratches run NNW/SSE to the right of the E in ONE and the T in CENT.  A die scratch runs SSW from the top of the second t in STATES through the C in AMERICA.  A small die gouge can be found just SE of the bottom right of the N in UNITED.  Reverse Stage E:  New reverse die.  A die scratch runs N/S midway between the upper left wheat ear and the C in CENT.  A small die gouge can be found below the N in UNUM.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found SE of the main eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Two strong, parallel die scratches run NE from the top of the Y in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs NE from the top of the 5 in the date.  Numerous die scratches run SW to NE in front of and behind the bust.  Abrasion doubling runs along the front of the neck and bowtie.  Obverse Stage B:  The die scratch from the top of the 5 is very weak.  The top of the 9 is filled with a die chip.  A die crack runs NW then west from the eyebrow.  Reverse Stage A:  A short, strong die scratch runs SSW from the top of the L in PLURIBUS.  The upper right N of CENT is distorted from abrasions to remove die clash marks.  A long die scratch runs SW from the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM to the top left of the C in CENT.  A strong die scratch runs SE from the bottom of the 2nd U in UNUM to the top of the right wheat ear.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches are gone.  A short, curving die gouge can be found below the M in UNUM.  A die scratch runs SE to NW above the 2nd T of STATES.  A strong die scratch runs SE from the bottom right N of UNITED to the top left F in OF.
