1984 1¢ WDDO-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A very strong spread to the north shows on Lincoln’s ear and also on the beard.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two parallel die scratches NW to SE through E of WE.  Two parallel die scratches NE from front of vest left of lower 1 in date.  Reverse:  Numerous west to east die scratches below Memorial.  Die scratch SSE from top right T of CENT.

1984 1¢ WDDO-002

Description:  Strong extra thickness and a spread towards the center shows on LIBERTY and IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A short die gouge can be found NE of the top of the beard.  Obverse Stage B:  Die clash marks can be found to the left of the back of the neck and as a line from the vest to the one in the date.  Die scratches form an X below the ER in LIBERTY.  Numerous die scratches can be found to the left of and to the right of the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  A strong diagonal die scratch runs through the E of ONE.  A long diagonal die scratch can be found between the ON of ONE and the Memorial.  Reverse Stage B:  Die clash marks can be found in the third Memorial bay, above the right side of the Memorial, and below the left side of the Memorial.  Three curving die scratches run SE from the upper right of the T in UNITED.

Description:  Extreme extra thickness shows on LIBERTY.

Description:  A strong spread towards the center shows on IGWT, LIBERTY, the date, the right side of the bottom of the bust, and all hair details at the top of the head.

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on the date and the right side of the bottom of the bust.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Strong die scratches run NNW from the shoulder to the right of the Y in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  Numerous die scratches run N/S in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 8th, and 9th Memorial bays.  A die crack runs from the right cornice to the rim passing between the R and I in AMERICA.  A die crack runs from the left cornice to the rim passing through the N of UNITED.

Description:  A strong spread to the NE shows on the lower ear, the beard, and Lincoln’s eye.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Numerous die scratches running mostly WSW/ENE can be seen throughout the obverse.  Reverse:  Very strong N/S die gouge can be seen in the 10th Memorial bay.

Description:  Extra thickness plus separation lines all spread towards the center show on the date and TRUST.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch arcs from west to ENE through the upper digits in the date.  A die scratch runs from WNW to ESE below the date.  A heavy die scratch runs from WNW to ESE to the right of the nose.  Numerous other die scratches run throughout the obverse.  Reverse:  Remnants of a die clash can be found in the 8th and 9th bays and also above the right end of the Memorial roof.  Several die scratches run NW from the bottom of the 1st column to the N in UNITED.  A die scratch runs SW from the top right side of the Memorial roof above the right cornice.  A die scratch runs from WSW to ENE above the O in OF.

Description:  Extra thickness shows on USA and EPU.  Some separation lines are visible on the U of UNITED and the E and P in EPU.  Notches are visible on the lower A’s and the R in AMERICA.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short die gouge extends from the rim above the right side of the O in GOD.  Reverse:  Die scratches can be found above the statue’s right shoulder.  Vertical die scratches can be found to the right of the lower N in ONE.

Description:  Extra thickness shows on USA, EPU, ONE CENT, and the designer’s initials.  Notches are visible on the lower A’s and the R in AMERICA.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse die has been heavily abraded with numerous vertical die scratches running through the 84 in the date.  A strong die scratch runs SSE from the bottom of the T in LIBERTY.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Reverse:  The reverse die has been heavily abraded with many die scratches throughout the reverse.  A die gouge can be found between the upper N and T in CENT.
