1987 1¢ WDDO-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  A nice spread towards the center shows on the date and the right side of the bottom of the bust.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die gouge can be found between the S and T in TRUST.  A short die scratch runs NE from the top of the bowtie.  A short vertical die scratch can be found to the right of the second T in TRUST.  Obverse Stage B:  The die has been heavily abraded.  Numerous die scratches run ENE from the front of the bust.  A strong die scratch runs SW from the back of the neck.  Numerous die scratches run WSW from the back of the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  Two die gouges can be found inside the lower E in ONE.  A die scratch runs SSW/NNE in the first Memorial bay.  Reverse Stage B:  The die has been heavily abraded.  Numerous die scratches run mostly E/W above and below the Memorial.

1987 1¢ WDDO-002

Description:  Extra thickness with weak separation lines show on the date and IGWT.  Lincoln’s eye is doubled.  The lower right R of TRUST shows a distinct notch.  There is some extra thickness to the upper hair details.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Weak vertical die scratches inside the ear are visible on all known stages.  Obverse Stage B:  Same as Stage A.  Obverse Stage C:  Numerous die scratches running mostly NNW/SSE can be found throughout the obverse.  Reverse Stage A:  A short die gouge runs NW from the lower left corner of the Memorial.  A small die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the lower C in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  New reverse die.  A small die gouge can be found inside the top of the U in UNITED.  Two short diagonal die scratches run from the upper right of the 6th Memorial column to the roof.  Reverse Stage C:  Two strong parallel die scratches run from the E in UNITED to the upper left of the E in EPU.  A strong die scratch can be found inside the upper O of ONE.

Description:  Extra thickness with some separation lines spread towards the rim show on the date and IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Four heavy die scratches run ESE from the bowtie.  Three strong vertical die scratches can be found to the left of the lips.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found midway between the bottoms of the E in ONE and the C in CENT.
