1988-D 1¢ WDDO-001         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A Class II spread towards the center shows on the date and slightly on IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs NNE from the top of the TY in LIBERTY.  Two die gouges can be found to the left of the upper head south of the G in GOD.  Reverse:  A short strong die gouge can be found near the rim midway between the second A in AMERICA and the designer’s initials.

1988-D 1¢ WDDO-002

Description:  Light extra thickness shows on the date, the eyelid, and slightly on WE TRUST and the hairlines on the top of the head.  Notches show on the lower 1 and 9, the lower right R in TRUST, and the lower E in WE.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches can be found between the hair at the bottom of the back of the head and the top of the back of the collar.  Reverse:  None noted.

1988-D 1¢ WDDO-003

Description:  Light extra thickness shows on the date, the eyelid, LIBERTY and IGWT.  Notches show on the lower 1 and 9.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die gouge (dot) SE of the T in LIBERTY.  Short vertical die gouge on the front fold of the vest SW of the mint mark.  Reverse:  Short die crack east from the center of the E in AMERICA.  WSW/ENE die scratches above and below the E PL in EPU.  Nearly horizontal die scratch through the center of the N in CENT.

1988-D 1¢ WDDO-004

Description:  Light extra thickness shows on the date and LIBERTY.  Weak separation lines show on the 1 and 9 along with weak notches on those lower digits.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Short die scratch NW from the center of the first 8.  Short diagonal die gouge above and between the 1 and the 9.  Reverse:  Short die scratch from the top of the I in UNITED to the rim.

Description:  A close Class II spread towards the center shows on the date where it is best seen on the lower 9.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A light SW/NE die scratch can be found in the field to the left of the back of the head.  Reverse:  None significant.

Description:  A Class II spread towards the center shows on the date and the bottom front of the bust.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found inside the upper 9.  Reverse:  A short, nearly horizontal die gouge can be found between the U of UNITED and the upper first column.

Comments:  The original listing was a “wavy steps” variety and these are no longer believed to be doubled dies.

1988-D 1¢ WDDR-002

Description:  Doubling shows on the central left side of the 4th Memorial column.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A heavy die scratch extends north from the top left of the S in TRUST.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the center of the T in CENT.
