1943-D 1¢ WRPM-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  D/D Southwest

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Slanted die gouge across the lower portion of the lapel.  A series of die scratches in the field between the bottom of the bust and the rim.  A short, horizontal die scratch to the right of the mint mark.  A short, strong die scratch north from the upper forehead.  Reverse:  Wavy die gouge between the AM of AMERICA.  A short die scratch runs NNE from the top right of the 1st T in STATES.  A die scratch runs NE from the N in UNITED to the C in CENT.  Other die scratches can be found on the reverse.

1943-D 1¢ WRPM-003

Description:  D/D South

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Parallel die scratches SW from the 9 of the date to Lincoln’s vest.  Parallel die scratches extend SSW from the bottom of the I of IN.  Reverse:  Series of parallel die scratches run from SW to NE between the lower portions of the ON of ONE and the CE in CENT.  Die gouge in the shape of a die dot seen below and to the right of the E of ONE.

1943-D 1¢ WRPM-004

Description:  D/D Southwest

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch extends from the center of the E of WE toward the first T of TRUST.  Two small die gouges below the collar. Reverse:  A series of light die scratches all going east to west inside the M of AMERICA.

1943-D 1¢ WRPM-005

Description:  D/D West

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:    The obverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1943-D 1¢ WDDO-035.  It shows an extra eyelid south of the normal eyelid.  A wavy die gouge can be found between the O and D of GOD.  A short die gouge extends from the lower right portion of the E of LIBERTY as well as a N/S die scratch inside the E of LIBERTY.  Die pitting can be seen to the right of the N of IN.  Obverse Stage B:  Die crack from the rim at 7:30 running NE to the back of the shoulder and then running high over VDB.  The die crack is intersected by another die crack that runs along the shoulder and then intersected by another die crack that runs through the shoulder and lapel and exits to the rim at 5:00.  Obverse Stage C:  Stronger die cracks on the jacket and lapel.  New die crack NNE from the shoulder die crack toward the neck.  Reverse Stage A:  A die crack from the top of the O of ONE running north passing the right side of the U of PLURIBUS and onto the rim.  A series of die scratches run from NW to SE above and through the UNIT of UNITED.  Reverse Stage B:  New reverse die.  Long die scratch from below the E in AMERICA running SW almost to the left wheat stem.  Two E/W die scratches in the field well below the M and E in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage C:  Stage B die scratches still present.

1943-D 1¢ WRPM-006

Description:  D/D Northeast

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None noted.  Reverse:  Die crack runs from the rim left of L in PLURIBUS to the O in ONE down the left side, and extending toward the right side of C in CENT.  Die chip on T in CENT.

Comments:  The original WRPM-006 listing is illustrated on page 37 of the 1983 book The RPM Book by John A. Wexler & Tom Miller.  Further study of that die showed that it is a duplicate of WRPM-004 and as such the variety has been replaced by this die.  Photos of this variety are provided by Brian Ribar.

Description:  D/D Southwest

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die scratch extends NW from the back of Lincoln’s bust toward the R of LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  Die crack west to east on the base of the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  First Reverse.  Die crack running north from the top of the O in ONE into the first U in PLURIBUS.  Die crack seen on the vertical shaft of the T in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  New reverse die.  A die gouge (dot) SE of the E in EPU. A die gouge on the inside edge of upper right vertical shaft of the N in ONE.  Die gouge seen inside upper U in UNITED.  A die gouge (dot) between the bottom of the T and E of UNITED.  A light die crack runs from the top of the O in ONE to the L in PLURIBUS.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:   The obverse is a minor doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1943-D 1¢ WDDO-010 showing an extra eyelid south of the normal eyelid.  A long die gouge can be found below the L of LIBERTY.  A circular die scratch pattern can be found above the back of Lincoln’s collar.  Obverse Stage B:  Same as Stage A.  Obverse Stage C:  Same as Stage B.  Obverse Stage D:  Small die chip is seen on the forehead near the edge of the field and above the brow.  Reverse Stage A:  Long NNW/SSE die scratch above the second S of STATES.  Reverse Stage B:  A die crack runs from the top left of the O in ONE to the bottom of the 1st U in PLURIBUS.  A die crack runs south from the lower left of the O in ONE to the top right of the C in CENT.  A die crack runs down the lower T in CENT with small die chips on the die crack.  Reverse Stage C:  Stronger chips on the T of CENT.  Crack from the O of ONE to the C of CENT is stronger.  Reverse stage D:  New reverse die.  A die crack runs from the top of the O in ONE to the bottom of the 1st U in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs NE from the lower left wheat ear through the O in OF to the I in UNITED.

1943-D 1¢ WRPM-010

Description:  D/D South

Die Markers:  Obverse: A strong circular die scratch on the upper portion of Lincoln’s coat.  Slanted die gouge to the left of the second T of TRUST.  Die crack from the rim at 7:30 running NE through the shoulder.  Die crack from above midpoint of the lapel running SSE and then becoming a fork that runs south and east.  E/W die crack across the top of the head.  Die crack (spike) running north from the top of the head, through the left side of the W in WE and to the rim.  Reverse:  Die crack from the rim at 11:00 running SSW through the L of PLURIBUS, through the O in ONE and exiting at the left lower side of the O.  Die scratch north from the left wheat tip and running under the E of EPU.  Die scratch SSW from the lower left of the T in CENT to the A in STATES.

1943-D 1¢ WRPM-012

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:   Two almost parallel die scratches run from SW to NE above the 9 of the date.  Three short, parallel and nearly horizontal die scratches behind Lincoln’s neck.  Numerous light NNE/SSW die scratches on the right side of the field closer to the profile.  Die gouge on left center of the lapel.  Die scratch SSE from the lower lip to the beard.  Obverse Stage B:  Stage A die scratches are weaker.  Weak die crack east from the back of the jacket, running above the designer’s initials and continuing to the jacket fold.  Obverse Stage C:  Stage A scratches in the field nearly gone.  Other stage A scratches present but weaker.  Die crack from the back of the jacket is stronger.  Large die chip intersecting the crack above the B of the designer’s initials.  Weak die crack running up the lower right side of the lapel.  Die crack above the eye running west and then turning NW to the center of the head where it turn west again and runs into the hair.  Reverse Stage A:  Die gouge to the upper left of the M of UNUM.  Short die scratch south from the lower left center of the E in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  Stage A die marker still present.  Reverse Stage C: Stage A scratch abraded away.  Light die scratch NW from the upper left side of the F in OF.

Description:  D/D North

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs NNE from the top right of the chin.  Reverse:  Two die scratches run SSW from the bottom of the E in CENT running through the E in UNITED.  A die scratch runs NE from the left wheat stem to the bottom left of the 1st A in AMERICA.  Other die scratches can be found on the reverse.

1943-D 1¢ WRPM-014        "Best Of" Variety

Description:  D/D North

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Several die scratches run parallel to the rim starting at the W of WE and running between the letters of TRUST and the rim. Die scratches run parallel to the rim under the right side of the bust.  A die scratch runs SSE from the bottom left of the L of LIBERTY.  One long die scratch running NE to the bottom of the 4 in date with a second die scratch starting at the 9 in date running SE to the top of the mint mark forming an X to the upper and left side of the mint mark.  Reverse:  A thin crack from the top of the O in ONE running north to the bottom of the first U of PLURIBUS.  A die gouge (dot) to the right of the center of the E of ONE.

1943-D 1¢ WRPM-015

Description:  D/D South

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is a doubled die variety that is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1943-D 1¢ WDDO-019.  A Class V CW spread shows on both T’s in TRUST, the eyelid, the bowtie, the date, and the Y in LIBERTY.  Three die scratches curve NW from the top left of the Y in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  The reverse is a minor doubled die variety that is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1943-D 1¢ WDDR-013.  Light extra thickness shows on the top left wheat ear, the E PL of EPU, and the left dot.  A die crack runs from the upper left O in ONE through the right side of the 1st U in PLURIBUS and out to the rim.  Numerous die scratches run from SW to NE between the C and E in CENT.  A die gouge can be found in the upper N of CENT.

1943-D 1¢ WRPM-016

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Short die gouge through the upper right portion of the 9 of the date.  Die gouge in the fold to the lower left of the bottom of the lapel.  Light NW/SE die scratches through the 1 in the date.  Lighter NNW/SSE die scratch on the right side of the field and the left side of the field near the back of the jacket.  Die scratch NW from the right side of the eyelid.  Wavy NW/SE die gouge along the right side of the nose.  Obverse Stage B:  All stage A scratches are weaker but present.  Gouge through the 9 is abraded away.  Gouge at the nose is very weak.  Obverse Stage C:  NW/SE feeder finger mark right of the beard that runs through the lips and cheek.  Stage B markers still present.  Reverse Stage A:  Long die scratches to the left of the upper portion of the right wheat.  Small die chip at the upper left side of the P in PLURIBUS.  Die scratch north from the upper left side of the E of ONE.  NNW/SSE die scratches in the field at the upper right of the T of CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  Die gouge above the N of UNITED.  Scratch from the E of ONE still present.  All remaining Stage A markers are abraded away.  Reverse Stage C:  Stage B markers still present.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also a doubled die that is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1943-D 1¢ WDDO-037.  An extra eyelid can be found below the normal eyelid.  A wavy die gouge can be found below the R of TRUST.  Die crack above VDB.  Reverse:  Die crack from the top of the O of ONE through the first U of PLURIBUS and onto the rim.  Die crack starting at the furthest right wheat line of the right wheat stalk running south meandering onto the right kernels and splitting in two, one branch heads off to and ends at the rim the other branch continuing south ending nearly at the end of the stalk tail.

1943-D 1¢ WRPM-020

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Strong rotational die scratches centered at the front of the neck can be found on the bust and in the fields to the left and right of the bust.  Several die scratches run from NNW to SSE through and below the 19 in the date.  A short, horizontal die gouge can be found below the front of the chin.  Obverse Stage B:  A die crack runs from west to east through the center rear of the forehead.  Obverse Stage C: Stronger die crack through the head.  Die scratches at the date are weaker.  Reverse Stage A:  A short die gouge can be found inside the upper C in CENT.  A die crack runs north from the top left of the O in ONE to the bottom of the 1st U in PLURIBUS.  Reverse Stage B:  The die crack from the O in ONE to the 1st U in PLURIBUS now extends to the rim and is much stronger.  A die crack connects the top of the O and N in ONE.  Reverse Stage C: New reverse die.  A weak die crack runs from the left side of the O in ONE to the L in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs SW from the upper left of the P in PLURIBUS.

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Numerous concentric die scratches radiate outward from a point on the upper center of the neck.  A die crack runs along the left side of the base of the bust north of the designer’s initials.  A die crack runs from SW to NE on the upper shoulder.  Reverse:  Two parallel die scratches run WSW from the bottom right of the N in CENT.  Three parallel die scratches run from west to east below AMERICA.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

1943-D 1¢ WRPM-022

Description:  D/D South

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Curving die scratches in a N/S direction left of the 1 in the date.  A die gouge can be found between the upper E of WE and T of TRUST.  Die crack east from the B in the designer’s initials running along the bust line.  Second E/W die crack above the previous crack running over the designer’s initials that is intersected by a die crack running north.  Reverse:  Die scratches NE from the top of the T in CENT.  ENE/WSW die scratch through the lower area of the T in CENT.  Numerous other die scratches, mostly SW/NE, can be found throughout the reverse.  Thin die crack starting at the top of the O of ONE running north to the first U in PLURIBUS.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die gouge on the left side of the R of TRUST.  Light ESE/WNW die scratches between the lower area of the W and E of WE.  Reverse:  Die crack from the top of the C of CENT through the left side of the O of ONE through the L of PLURIBUS to the rim.  A series of die gouges between the upper portions of the A and T of STATES.  Long chipped die crack on the right side of the vertical bar of the T in CENT.  WNW die crack from the rim at 3:15 that runs through the wheat grains into the field.  NNW die crack on the upper left side of the E in ONE then turning north and running to the last dot at EPU.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Very long die gouge from the 4 of the date to the 9 of the date to the vest, across the vest, lapel and coat, to the right of VDB.  Die gouge between the upper portions of the N of IN and the G of GOD.  Die scratch south from the right lower side of the 9 in the date.  Tooling marks part way in from the upper front of the collar.  Die crack from the upper left side of the lapel running slightly WSW and then turning west.  Reverse:  Die crack from the O of ONE through the first U of PLURIBUS to the rim.  Die gouge to the right of E of ONE.

Description:  D/D Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die crack runs from the top of the O in GOD to the rim.  Numerous die scratches run SSW to NNE on the neck.  A die scratch runs SSW to NNE to the right of the top of the bowtie.  Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die variety listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1943-D 1¢ WDDR-008.  A very strong Class II spread towards the center along with strong Class VI extra thickness shows on the upper left wheat ear and the lower right wheat stem where there is evidence of tripling.  Other doubling shows on the C and T of CENT, the E PL of E PLURIBUS, the UM of UNUM, ATES of STATES and the RICA of AMERICA.  A short die gouge runs SSW from the lower right R of AMERICA.  A die scratch runs from the C in AMERICA SSW to the tip of the right wheat stem.  Two parallel die scratches run NNW from NNW from the top right of the N in UNITED to the lower left of the C in CENT.  A die crack runs north from the top of the O in ONE through the 1st U in PLURIBUS to the rim.
