1943-S 1¢ WRPM-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  S/S West

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Specimen needed.  Reverse:  Specimen needed.

Comments:  The files retrieved from the late John Bordner indicate that he had seen three stages of this variety.  However, no die marker information for these stages could be located.  If you have a specimen of this variety, I would very much like to see it to shoot photos and obtain the appropriate die marker information.





1943-S 1¢ WRPM-002

Description:  S/S South

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A long die scratch runs NNW from the top right of the R in LIBERTY.  A vertical die scratch can be found just to the left of the vertical bar of the T in LIBERTY.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE to the right of the lower N of IN.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs from SW to NE below the R in AMERICA.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE below the E in EPU.  A die crack runs NNE from the tip of the left wheat ear.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

1943-S 1¢ WRPM-003

Description:  S/S West

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die gouge in the field well under the R of LIBERTY and left of the lower coat.  Reverse:  A long die gouge runs SE from the upper right side of the left wheat to the top of the first S in STATES.

1943-S 1¢ WRPM-004

Description:  S/S West

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also a doubled die that is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1943-S 1¢ WDDO-009.  An extra eyelid can be found under the front of the normal eyelid.  A long die scratch runs SE from the bottom left of the R in LIBERTY.  A long die scratch runs SSE from the bottom of the T in LIBERTY.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs NE from the center crossbar of the E in ONE through the top of the E.  Other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Pending.  Reverse:  Pending.

Comments:  The files retrieved from the late John Bordner indicate that he had seen three stages of this variety.  However, no die marker information for these stages could be located and there were no photos of the variety.  This is pending re-examination of my copy of the die for photos and markers.


 

1943-S 1¢ WRPM-006

Description:  S/S West

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Strong die scratch between the T and R of TRUST.  Die crack (Spiked Head) from Lincoln’s head to the rim to the left of WE.  Die gouge below the U of TRUST.  Die gouge above and between the 9 and 4 of the date.  Strong die clash marks to the right of the throat, from the vest to the upper 1, and to the left of the back of the neck.  Die gouge to the right of the front of the lower vest.  Die crack from rim ENE through the V in V.D.B. and into the lower shoulder.  Reverse:  Die crack runs NW from the top right of the N of ONE through the R of PLURIBUS to the rim.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE through the upper T in CENT.

1943-S 1¢ WRPM-007         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  S/S East

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A long strong die gouge to the left of the base of the bust.  Two die scratches below G of GOD.  Die gouge on the lower right side of the O of GOD.  Die crack across the base of the bust.  Reverse:   Strong die scratch to the right and left of the E of ONE.

1943-S 1¢ WRPM-008

Description:  S/S Northwest

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratch NW from the hair, running between GOD and WE.  Light die scratch NNW from the hair to the E of WE.  Reverse:  Die crack from the rim at 4:00 running midway way to the wheat grains and then turning WNW to the last S in STATES.

1943-S 1¢ WRPM-009

Description:  S/S Southeast

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Long die scratch near the rim above WE TRUST.  E/W die crack across the lower part of the jacket running into the lapel.  Obverse Stage B:  Die crack is slightly stronger.  Reverse Stage A:  No prominent die markers.  Reverse Stage B:  Die crack from the rim at 10:00 running SE to the left wheat ear.  Die crack from the rim at 2:00 running SW to the right wheat ear.

Description:  S/S Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse.  Die crack across the base of the bust.  Slanted die scratch on Lincoln’s cheek.  Reverse:  Slanted die gouge above the right side of the first T of STATES.  NNE/SSW die scratch inside the first U in PLURIBUS.

1943-S 1¢ WRPM-011

Description:  S/S Northwest

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also a doubled die that is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1943-S 1¢ WDDO-012.  Die scratches to the west of the W in WE run WNW.  Heavy concentric die scratches are present by the rim to the southeast of the second T in TRUST.  A vertical die clash is present in front of the throat.  Reverse:  Multiple die chips are present below the UR in PLURIBUS.  A die chip is present at the east side of the E of ONE, at the center horizontal bar.

Comments:  This is a replacement for the original WRPM-011 which was found to be related to bubbling involving much of the planchet.  Incidentally, the original and now delisted WRPM-011 die does contain a doubled eyelid, which has been added to the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1943-S 1¢ WDDO-020 and is cross referenced to Coppercoins: 1943S-1DO-004.

Description:  S/S Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse:  N/S die scratch below the right side of the first T in TRUST.  Reverse:  Small die crack on the right side of the upper wheat grain of the left wheat ear.  Die scratch from the top of the last A in AMERICA to the lower left of the E in STATES.

1943-S 1¢ WRPM-013

Description:  S/S Tilted (Rotated)

Die Markers:  Obverse.  Die clash at the throat. From the rim at 7:00 a die crack runs east to the lapel. From the upper part of the lapel a crack runs SW then turns SE and then turns east again.  Reverse.  Die gouge (dot) in the field to the upper right of the last A of AMERICA.
