1971-S $1 Pr WDDR-009

Description:  A Class II quadrupled spread towards the center shows on USA, EPU, all stars, ONE DOLLAR, the lower right wing feathers, the olive branch and lower leaves, and slightly on the designer’s initials.  The quadrupling is best seen on stars 9 and 10 and the bottom right of the R in AMERICA.  Most of the other letters of USA and EPU appear strongly doubled.  The spread appears as extra thickness on ONE DOLLAR.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Peg Leg R in LIBERTY.  The obverse shows close doubling from WWHO-011.  A short, vertical die scratch can be found to the right of the top of the L in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the upper N in UNITED.

1971-S $1 Pr WDDR-010          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  An extremely strong Class V CCW spread from a pivot at 7:00 shows on USA, EPU, ONE DOLLAR, the stars, the designer’s initials, the earth, the eagle’s left wing feathers, the tail feathers, the olive branch and leaves, and the craters with the strongest spread on the right side of the reverse.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Peg Leg R.  The obverse is a working die produced from the doubled working hub identified as 1971-S $1 Pr WWHO-003 and shows the doubling noted for that doubled working hub.  Reverse:  Two small die gouges (dots) can be found at the rim below the D in DOLLAR.

1971-S $1 Pr WDDR-011

Description:  A Class II quintupled spread towards the center shows on USA, the stars, EPU, ONE DOLLAR, the designer’s initials, the olive branch and leaves, and the craters with the strongest spread on the lower right side of the reverse.  Most elements show quadrupling or strong thickness, but the upper right 2nd L in DOLLAR is clear quintupled.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also a doubled die that is listed in the files as 1971-S $1 Pr WDDO-016.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found between the upper S and T of STATES.  Two small die gouges (dots) can be found between the two craters on the right.

1971-S $1 40% WDDR-012

Description:  A Class I CW spread shows on USA, ONE DOLLAR, EPU, the stars, the craters, the end of the olive branch, and slightly on the designer’s initials.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch runs SE from the lower right N of IN to the top of the 1st T in TRUST.  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the 2nd T in TRUST.  Reverse:  X-shaped die scratches can be found midway between star #1 and star #2.  Two parallel die scratches run SE from the dot to the left of UNUM.

Comments:  The spread of the doubling on this variety is not as strong as the spread seen on the doubled working hub reverse listed as WWHR-001.















1971-S $1 Pr WDDR-013

Description:  A Class II spread towards the center shows on USA, EPU, ONE DOLLAR, the stars, the olive leaves on the left side of the branch, and the outer edges on the lower right wing feathers.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Peg Leg.  The obverse has doubling from WWHO-004.  A die gouge can be found midway between the bottom of the nose and the upper lip.  Reverse:  None significant.

1971-S $1 Pr WDDR-014

Description:  A Class V CCW spread from a pivot a 9:00 shows on USA, EPU, the stars, ONE DOLLAR, the underside of the feathers on the upper left wing (viewer’s right), and slightly on the designer’s initials.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Serif R.  Diagonal abrasions can be found between the lower W and E of WE as well as below the E.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the lower O in OF.  A small die gouge can be found midway between the tops of the 2nd L and the A in DOLLAR.

Description:  A Class II tripled spread towards the center shows on the letters of ONE DOLLAR, USA, the stars, the olive branch and leaves, and the designer’s initials.  The strongest spread is on the left side and bottom of the reverse.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also a doubled die that is listed in the files as 1971-S $1 Pr WDDO-017.  Reverse:  A die gouge can be found between the lower O and L of DOLLAR.  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the upper E in ONE.
