1999 1¢ WDDO-001         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong partial earlobe can be found to the right of the normal earlobe.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found well south of the last 9 in the date.  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the lower G in GOD.  The obverse shows evidence of abrasion to remove die clash marks in the area behind the neck and around the ear suggesting that pre-die clash specimens may even show more of the extra earlobe.  Reverse:  Two small die gouges can be found below the right end of the Memorial.  Strong die clash marks show in the lower 4th and 9th Memorial bays.  A die clash mark runs south from the bottom of the Memorial below the post to the right of the steps.

Description:  Doubling shows on the lower left side of the 7th column to the right of the lower statue.  An extra knee can be seen between the statue’s legs.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found above the left side of the 1st 9 in the date.  Reverse:  A strong die scratch runs SE from the bottom of the steps south of the 7th column.  Parallel die scratches can be found above the T in CENT.

Description:  Doubling shows on the lower right side of the 6th column to the left of the statue’s legs.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found above the right side of the E of LIBERTY.  A die gouge can be found to the left of the bottom of the I of IN.  A die gouge can be found touching the right side of the last 9 of the date.  Reverse:  A die gouge is present under the left side of the memorial base.  Several die gouges are present left of the memorial base and first column.  A die scratch runs from the dot after UNUM SSE to the memorial roof.  A die gouge is present southeast of S of PLURIBUS.  A die gouge is present under the right leg of the second A in AMERICA.  A small die gouge (dot) is present inside the left side of the second A in AMERICA just under the horizontal bar.  A die gouge is present right of the second A in AMERICA at the level of the horizontal bar.  A die gouge is present inside the right side of O of ONE a bit above center.  A die gouge touches the lower right side of O of ONE.  Two die gouges are present on the lower memorial roof centered above and just right of the third column.

Description:  Doubling shows on the central right side of the 6th column to the left of the upper statue.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  EDS.  A small die gouge (dot) touches the right side of B of LIBERTY just below center.  A small die gouge (dot) is present under the right side of the left upright of N of IN.  A small die gouge (dot) is present southeast of the lower tip of the first 9 of the date.  Two small die gouges (dots) are present just above and just below the left side of the third 9 of the date.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs SW/NE in the center of the third memorial bay.  A long die scratch runs SSE from E in STATES through the right side of the first U in PLURIBUS to between the upper N and U in UNUM.  A small die gouge (dot) is present just southwest of E in CENT.  Small die gouges (dots) are present just right and left of the top of the twelfth memorial column.

Description:  Doubling shows on the central right side of the 6th column to the left of the upper statue.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge (dot) is present just near the rim centered above I and N in IN.  A die gouge is present below and slightly to the right of the right side of N of IN.  A die gouge touches the right side of the upright of the second T in TRUST.  A die gouge is present right of the center of R, with a WSW/ENE orientation.  Two about horizontal die gouges are present touching the left side of B in LIBERTY, one about a fourth from the bottom and one a bit from the top.  Reverse:  A die gouge is present between L and U in PLURIBUS.  A die gouge is present above the left side of N in UNUM.  A die gouge is present above the middle of M in UNUM.  A die gouge is present above the left upright of U in UNITED abutting the rim.  A small die gouge (dot) is present just right of the upright of T in CENT about a fifth from the top.  A die gouge is present north of N in ONE halfway toward the memorial base.  A horizontal die gouge is present left of the first memorial column at the level of the center of U in UNITED.  Slight feeder finger damage is present under the right side of the memorial base under the stairs.

Description:  Bar extended from the bottom of the hand to the lower knee to the left of the statue on the sixth column and an extra knee is present between and above the knees.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Stage A:  A die gouge can be found on Lincoln's jacket to the right of the shoulder.  Stage B:  No additional markers noted.  Reverse:  Stage A:  A die gouge can be found within the upper R of AMERICA.  A die scratch can be found at the rim to the left of the left memorial base.  Stage B:  The die scratch left of the memorial base is still present.  A die gouge can be found below the end of the right side of the crossbar of the T of CENT.  A die gouge can be found touching the left side of the upright of the T of CENT.  Die gouges can be found to the left and within the O of ONE.  A die crack with chips can be found on the upper left side of the second memorial column.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A curving die scratch extends from the top front of Lincoln's hair to the bottom of the W of WE.  A die gouge can be found a bit below the I of IN.  Several large die gouges can be found directly south of I of IN.  A die gouge can be found on the mid-lapel well below the buttonhole.  Reverse:  Die scratches run NW/SE through the right side of and left of C of CENT.  Numerous die scratches run WNW/ESE through and above CENT.  A die clash can be found on the lower right side of the fourth memorial column.  Die scratches run ESE from U and N of UNITED through the first two memorial bays.
